Job description

Position Summary:

Builds and repairs custom machine shop tools using machining equipment and measuring instruments. Works from blueprints and sketches to create or modify prototypes, tools, dies, jigs, fixtures and molds. Calculates the dimensions and tolerances required to set up the machine tools. Operates lathes, grinders, milling, and boring machines to produce tools. Provides technical expertise and leadership coordination to product line teams or departments or shifts.

Principle Duties (includes, but is not limited to):

  • Lays out, constructs, alters, fits, assembles and repairs various jigs, fixtures, dies, molds, templates, inspection fixtures and gauges and similar devices.

  • Reads and interprets blueprints and works from verbal instructions or written diagrams in producing the part to be copied or fitted.

  • Makes necessary mathematical calculations and select allowances for shrinkage, machining, finishing and fitting.

  • Selects and lays out appropriate materials.

  • Performs intricate machining operations on equipment such as engine lathes, milling machines, grinders, band saws, drill presses, etc., to close tolerances considering types of materials, tolerances, types of cutting tools, coolants, lubricants and machine tool speeds and feeds.

  • Performs skilled bench and hand work such as filing, scraping, grinding, polishing, fitting and adjusting to ensure satisfactory performance .

  • Uses calipers, micrometers, verniers, comparator and other precision measuring instruments to maintain close tolerances.

  • Replaces and sharpens drill tooling.

  • Lubricates and performs routine preventative maintenance on equipment.

  • Moves and positions parts and materials using a crane.

  • Checks application of work for workability, proper locating and nesting.

  • Detects and corrects faulty operations

  • Assumes responsibility over complex projects.

  • Trains new employees and coworkers in tool and die shop operation.

  • Assists machinists and millwrights in equipment overhaul.

  • Provides input to product designers on manufacturing capability on new and revised products.

  • Participates actively in Operational Excellence and Quality processes including project team involvement, problem solving, and recommending solutions to enhance and improve the quality of departmental and/or company-wide business activities.

  • Supplies vendors with materials and prints.

  • Schedules & monitors vendors on-time delivery and quality.

  • Communicates with and advises vendors.

  • Performs other work as assigned.

Essential Qualifications / Experience:

  • Ability to use shop mathematics, tables, formulas and trigonometry.

  • Ability to read and interpret intricate blueprints.

  • Ability to sustain moderate physical effort, normally working with medium weight material. Lifting, bending, carrying and climbing are common but not repetitious. Concentrated mental and visual attention in planning, laying out and performing complex work to very close tolerances required.

  • High degree of physical and mental dexterity and visual attention for sustained periods required.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision on unusual conditions necessitating a

  • High degree of ingenuity and judgment on very involved and complex jobs.

  • 8 or more years in a tool and die machinist position or the equivalent.

  • Formal training beyond high school equivalent to 4 to 5 years formal tool and die training/apprenticeship.
