Job summary

United Launch Alliance (ULA) in Denver is seeking a Thermodynamics Engineer to perform thermal analyses for upgrades and new developments to the Vulcan Centaur V flight system, including performance upgrades and reusability of BE-4 engines, long duration upper stage operations, and Centaur V on SLS.

Responsibilities include pre-launch, ascent, on-orbit and re-entry analyses, developing analytical approaches, and defining requirements for launch systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • Relevant coursework in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and/or fluids.

Responsibilities

  • Performs conceptual and detailed thermal analysis and design for the launch vehicle booster, upper stage and launch facility at both the detailed component level and at the systems level.
  • Analyses include pre-launch, ascent, on-orbit and re-entry phases to ensure temperature limits are met and to define thermal protection systems.
  • Develops approaches, methodologies, and tools to solve complex engineering problems using analytical modeling, empirical, and semi-empirical approaches.
  • Defines, monitors, and controls requirements related to design, development, and operation of launch systems.
  • Develops procedures and plans for thermal test programs when existing capabilities are insufficient.
  • Resolves thermal issues arising from operational use in the field during production and launch operations.
  • Develops analysis process improvements to reduce cost and risk or improve vehicle performance.
