Job summary

Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board seeks a Therapeutic Recreation & Inclusion Supervisor to lead, coordinate, and evaluate therapeutic recreation programs and staff. You will ensure services align with best practices and MPRB goals while partnering with diverse communities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation Administration or closely related field with Therapeutic Recreation specialization.
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience leading therapeutic recreation programs and services.
  • First Aid and CPR certifications within one month of hire.
  • Valid driver's license with safe driving record.

Job description

Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is accepting applications for a compassionate and dedicated Therapeutic Recreation & Inclusion Supervisor who develops, implements, plans, coordinates, supervises, and evaluates therapeutic recreation programs, services, and staff. Ensures that programs and services demonstrate national best practices of therapeutic recreation and inclusion; are in alignment with the mission, vision, values, goals and objectives of the MPRB; and meet the needs and interests of diverse communities. Coordinates and collaborates with internal and external partners to build and support programming initiatives and goals.

This position will be required to work alternate work schedule including mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays. Ability to travel to different locations within the City of Minneapolis daily.

  • Oversee, evaluate, plan, modify, and direct the delivery of recreation activities and programs and the assigned staff or vendor to meet the needs of all individuals with disabilities.
  • Represent the MPRB through public presentations and committees; develop and meet with stakeholder groups (guardians, schools, civic organizations) and staff regularly to assess and plan program environments and needs, answer questions, and promote department services; respond to inquiries and make appropriate referrals.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, coach, develop, evaluate, discipline, and monitor Therapeutic Recreation staff and volunteers at multiple locations throughout the city.
  • Participate in organization budget process by identifying opportunities and resources to enhance facilities and programs for people with disabilities.
  • Research, develop, and write grant or funding proposals to support, enhance, or expand therapeutic recreation programming. Effectively manage and implement successful grant or funding proposals.
  • Prepare reports and databases, including pertinent demographic data and administrative and registration reports, to measure program and service delivery, progress and success.
  • Ensure that the Americans with Disabilities Act regulations are met or exceeded where applicable.
  • Strategically work variable hours, weekends, evenings, and holidays including working on-site during programs to support and evaluate program delivery.
  • Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.
Need to Have:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Parks and Recreation Administration, or closely related field with a specialty in Therapeutic Recreation.
  • Increasingly responsible experience operating and leading therapeutic recreation programs and services: at least five (5) years.
  • First Aid and CPR certifications required within one (1) month of hire.
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
Skills Crucial to Success in This Role:
  • Knowledge of theory, philosophy, principles, and best practices of therapeutic and inclusive recreation in outdoor and community settings.
  • Knowledge of principles, techniques, methodologies, awareness, and equipment employed when working with persons with disabilities and associate adaptive practices.
  • Knowledge of cultural competence in engaging with people from diverse communities.
  • Ability to provide leadership for staff and volunteers, and inclusion program and activity adaptations.
  • Ability to thoughtfully organize and creatively administer recreation activities for enhanced service delivery.
  • Ability to negotiate effective and appropriate solutions to difficult conflicts.
  • Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.

Selection Process:

  • We rate your training and experience based on application materials and supplemental questions (30%).
  • We conduct a structured panel interview (oral exam) (70%).
  • We calculate your civil service score based on the above components and place you on the eligible list if all testing components are passed (passing score for each component and as an overall score is 70.00 or above). Eligible list will expire in three (3) months.
  • We refer the top finalists to the hiring manager for an interview.
  • References, including verification of employment and work performance, may be considered.
  • We conduct a background check. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be asked to sign an informed consent allowing the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to obtain their criminal history in connection with the positions sought.
