Job summary

Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is seeking an Athletic Program Specialist to plan and implement city-wide athletic programs across facilities and service areas for residents of all ages and abilities. Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Recreation Administration, Sports Management, or closely related field.
• At least 1 year of experience in varied athletic programs; coach or official.
• Equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Plan, schedule and organize year-round youth and adult recreation activities for city-wide programs.
• Assess athletics and related services to meet community needs and demographics.
• Continuously recruit coaches and officials for athletic programs.

• Communicate plans, policies and procedures to officials and the public.

The MPRB's Athletics Department is seeking outgoing Athletic Program Specialist to plan and implement city-wide athletic programs for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB). Responsible for planning, implementing, promoting and evaluating citywide athletic programs in the Park Board's athletic facilities and service areas for residents of all ages, skills, and abilities in specific assigned sports and age groups to effectively fulfill the organization's mission in serving the community.

You will be required to work an alternate work schedule including evenings, weekends, and holiday.

• Responsible for planning, scheduling and organizing year-round youth and adult recreation activities for neighborhoods, communities or city-wide implementation of Athletic Programs within the Recreation Division to ensure the mission, goals, policies, and priorities and priorities of the MPRB.
• Assess athletics and associated recreation volunteer program to ensure services meet the current and future needs and demographics of the individual neighborhoods and the city of Minneapolis. Initiate and develop citywide youth and adult sports programs.
• Continuously recruit coaches and officials into the athletic programs.
• Work with potential sponsors to secure and utilize donations.
• Proactively support short and long term department policies, objectives and goals. Evaluate programs, activities and services to ensure they are meeting planned objectives using best practices.
• Effectively communicate official plans, policies and procedures that enhance and improve services to elected officials, and the public.
• Actively work alternate work schedule including nights, holidays, and weekends as needed. Must do evening and weekend game site visits, a minimum of two times a week, during each assigned league season and observe, network and engage with managers, coaches, officials, on-site staff, parents and participants. Must be at sites during league tournament games.
• Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.

Must Have

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Park and Recreation Administration, Recreation Administration, Sports Management, or a closely related field.
• Experience working in varied athletic programs and service delivery such as a coach and/or official: at least one (1) year
• An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
• Valid driver's license.

Nice to Have

• Experience in athletic league administration.
• CPR, AED, and First Aid certification within three months of hire.

Skills Crucial to Success in This Role

• Knowledge of contemporary sports management principles and procedures, and sports league standards and best practices.
• Knowledge of contemporary principles and best practices of various athletic field and facility management industry operating standards and procedures.
• Knowledge of planning, organizing, coordinating and implementing comprehensive community park and recreation programs in sports for diverse customer base for families, youth and adults.
• Ability to thoughtfully organize and creatively administer athletic programs, facilities, and services.
• Ability to demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
• Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.

Schedule

Normal office environment 25% of the time. 75% of the time out in the field, attending meetings, gathering supplies. Will be required to work alternate work schedule including evenings, weekends, and holiday.

Selection Process

• We review your minimum qualifications.
• We rate your training and experience based on application materials and supplemental questions (30%).
• We conduct a structured panel interview (oral exam) (70%).
• We calculate your civil service score based on the above components and place you on the eligible list if all testing components are passed (passing score for each component and as an overall score is 70.00 or above). Eligible list will expire in three (3) months.
• We refer the top finalists to the hiring manager for an interview.
• References, including verification of employment and work performance, may be considered.
• We conduct a background check. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be asked to sign an informed consent allowing the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to obtain their criminal history in connection with the positions sought.
