Job summary

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), CCUSO, seeks an Activities Specialist 2 to plan and deliver therapeutic recreational programs in a secure treatment environment in Cherokee, IA. This full-time role runs Monday–Friday, 10:30 a.m.–7:00 p.m., with opportunities for advancement.

The ideal candidate will be creative, organized, and collaborative, focusing on promoting healthy social interaction, emotional regulation, and responsible leisure while ensuring safety and security.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in art, behavioral/social sciences, recreation, or related fields.
• Two years of full-time work in an activities program.
• Current state employment requirement: eighteen months as Activities Specialist 1 is preferred; CDL may be required after hire.

Responsibilities

• Plan, develop, and deliver therapeutic recreational programs aligned with treatment goals.
• Modify activities to meet diverse needs.
• Supervise and coach patient aides and track work hours.
• Maintain attendance, notes, inventory, and incident reports.
• Participate in treatment team meetings and provide behavioral observations.
• Manage activity spaces, equipment, and supplies for safety.
• Collaborate with clinical, security, and administrative staff.
