Job summary

TRC Field Services is seeking Commissioning Technicians to support client teams across the Mid-Atlantic region. The role requires 3+ years of related testing and commissioning experience in electric utilities, with ability to read drawings and schematics, and to travel for extended periods.

Qualifications

  • :3+ years of related experience with testing and commissioning services (Electric Utility experience preferred; training provided for T‑C Engineers with experience in commissioning complex commercial‑industrial equipment including protective relays or other Power Systems Field Engineers with relay knowledge)
  • Project located in the Mid‑Atlantic
  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand construction and manufacturer drawings, specifications, and schematic diagrams
  • Strong knowledge of electrical protection systems, including relay communication; basic understanding of AC and DC schematics, wiring and drawings, one‑line and three‑line interconnection diagrams
  • Prior professional experience in medium and high‑voltage substation and power plant equipment; perform basic apparatus testing and interpret test results with supervision
  • Solid testing and commissioning knowledge of substation utility protection and control circuits; perform commissioning activities and interpret results with supervision; basic knowledge of and ability to learn commissioning methods to accurately conduct and document commissioning activities
  • Current US work eligibility and valid USA driver’s license; willingness to travel
  • Must be available for out‑of‑town travel of up to several weeks
  • Must be available for flexible hours, weekends, overtime, holidays, and night work
  • Excellent verbal and written skills; client and team communication and negotiation abilities

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, perform and document all commissioning activities of various utility substation protection, control and power circuits in accordance with TRC's and Client's requirements, budgets, schedules
  • Review wiring diagrams, schematics, engineering documents in advance of projects and outages
  • Troubleshoot and analyze protection and control systems and equipment, including errors and faults
  • Participate in project meetings including kickoff, planning, progress, and lessons learned meetings
  • Prepare detailed daily, weekly, and project completion reports and documentation
  • Assist in developing project‑specific testing and commissioning plans and energization plans
  • Identify risks and mitigation techniques on utility systems and equipment and develop Site Risk Assessments
  • Ensure all tests and commissioning activities are performed and results recorded and distributed
  • Develop detailed test reports and review/approve those reports

Overview

Due to continued growth, TRC Field Services (FSV) is seeking more Commissioning Technicians to support our Client Teams across the Mid-Atlantic region.

With a staff of over 200 experienced utility and industrial commissioning engineers and test technicians, TRC delivers comprehensive, cost‑effective solutions safely to our Electric Utility Customers while providing the best training programs and mentors in this industry and numerous opportunities for growth with excellent benefits.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, coordinate, perform and document all commissioning activities (pre‑commissioning, through construction, testing – commissioning, energization – project close out) of various utility substation protection, control and power circuits in accordance with TRC's and Client's requirements, budgets, schedules
  • Review wiring diagrams, schematics, engineering documents in advance of projects and outages
  • Perform trouble‑shooting and problem analysis associated with protection and control systems and utility substation equipment, including application errors, drawing errors, wiring errors, settings errors, equipment malfunctions, questionable apparatus test results, battery ground faults
  • Participate in project meetings including kickoff, planning, progress, and lessons learned meetings
  • Prepare detailed daily, weekly, and project completion reports and documentation that includes project progress, issues or problems, recommendations, test results and analyses
  • Assist in developing project‑specific testing and commissioning plans, energization plans, or any other assigned project‑specific documentation
  • Identify risks and associated mitigation techniques on utility systems and equipment, and develop a Site Risk Assessment to document all high‑risk construction and commissioning activities and formalize the processes of circuit isolation and restoration to ensure no unintended operations of station equipment, protection systems, or personnel safety
  • Make certain all applicable tests and/or commissioning activities are performed on every piece of equipment or system in accordance with planning and project documents, and that all test results are acceptable, permanently recorded, filed, and distributed properly
  • Develop detailed test reports of various types of electrical equipment; review and approve those reports
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of related experience with testing and commissioning services (Electric Utility experience preferred; training provided for T‑C Engineers with experience in commissioning complex commercial‑industrial equipment including protective relays or other Power Systems Field Engineers with relay knowledge)
  • Project located in the Mid‑Atlantic

  • Test experience using Doble Protection Suite and/or ProTest, SEL AcSELerator, Enoserv RTS highly preferred
  • Current US work eligibility required, together with a valid USA driver’s license issued by state of residence and in good standing
  • Must be available for out‑of‑town travel of up to several weeks at a time
  • Must be available for flexible hours, weekends, overtime, holidays, and night work
  • Must have excellent verbal and written skills and be able to communicate and negotiate effectively with clients and the team

Compensation

Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors.

Salary Range: USD $26.00 – USD $51.00 /Hr.

Other Compensation

Employee may be eligible to participate in the Company’s annual Discretionary Bonus Program, contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
