Job summary

Belcan in Berkeley, CA is seeking a Test Engineer for BMS hardware to execute verification testing at the component and system levels of battery management systems. You will collaborate with hardware, firmware, and systems engineers to validate designs and develop robust test plans and protocols.

Requirements include a 3+ year hardware testing background, a relevant engineering degree, and experience with CAN/SPI/I2C/UART interfaces, as well as test instrumentation and HIL testing.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of hardware testing experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering (or related field).
  • Strong understanding of BMS architectures, analog/digital circuits, and embedded interfaces (CAN, SPI, I2C, UART).
  • Hands-on experience with test instrumentation (oscilloscopes, power supplies, data acquisition systems, environmental chambers).
  • Familiarity with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and system-level integration testing.
  • Exposure to requirements management and traceability tools (e.g., Jama, Polarion, DOORS).
  • Understanding of reliability and compliance test standards (UL, IEC, ISO).

Responsibilities

  • Ensure BMS electronics meet functional, reliability, and compliance requirements through structured test campaigns.
  • Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and systems engineers to validate designs central to safe operation of battery systems.
  • Develop comprehensive test plans and verification protocols for BMS hardware.
  • Execute functional, reliability, and environmental tests on BMS PCBAs and integrated systems.
  • Define and document test configurations, instrumentation, test equipment, and setup requirements.
  • Analyze test data and generate detailed test reports with results, observations, and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to troubleshoot hardware issues identified during testing.
  • Contribute to test automation and infrastructure development to improve repeatability and throughput.
  • Maintain traceability between requirements, test cases, and results per verification standards.
  • Support design verification reviews and test readiness criteria.
  • Ensure tests are conducted in compliance with safety protocols and industry standards.

A Test Engineer, BMS Hardware job opportunity is open with our client in Berkeley, CA.   • Develop comprehensive test plans and verification protocols for BMS hardware, ensuring alignment with design requirements and system specifications.
  • Execute functional, reliability, and environmental tests on BMS PCBAs and integrated systems.
  • Define and document test configurations, including instrumentation, test equipment, and setup requirements.

Knowledge/Skills/Education/Experience
  • Bachelor"s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering (or related field).
  • 3+ years of experience in hardware testing, preferably in battery systems, automotive, or energy storage applications.
  • Strong understanding of BMS architectures, analog/digital circuits, and embedded system interfaces (CAN, SPI, I2C, UART).
  • Hands-on experience with test instrumentation (oscilloscopes, power supplies, data acquisition systems, environmental chambers).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage test plans, execute verification activities, and communicate findings effectively.
  • Familiarity with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) or system-level integration testing.
  • Exposure to requirements management and traceability tools (e.g., Jama, Polarion, DOORS).
  • Understanding of reliability and compliance test standards (e.g., UL, IEC, ISO).
