We are currently looking for a hands-on Electrical Engineer – Test Equipment Design for an exciting opportunity in Berkeley, California. The ideal candidate will have experience designing, building, testing, and troubleshooting electrical test infrastructure for PCBAs, power electronics, and complex electronic systems.
This role focuses on developing custom test racks, automated test equipment (ATE), electrical test fixtures, and reliability test setups for Battery Management System (BMS) hardware. The candidate should have practical experience with electrical schematics, component selection, wiring, PLCs, data acquisition (DAQ) systems, and hands-on equipment debugging.
We are looking for an engineer who enjoys building, testing, and troubleshooting real hardware—not just designing circuit boards.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and commission electrical test infrastructure for PCBA reliability testing, BMS hardware, and other power electronics.
- Develop custom test racks, electrical test fixtures, automated test equipment (ATE), and reliability test setups.
- Collaborate with PCBA design engineers to understand board functionality, electrical interfaces, pinouts, and operational requirements.
- Create electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable and harness drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) using tools such as EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or Altium.
- Select and size electrical components, including power supplies, relays, contactors, circuit breakers, PLCs, DAQ systems, load banks, and protective devices.
- Design electrical systems with appropriate safety measures, including interlocks, emergency stops (E-stops), fault protection, and protection against electrical hazards.
- Design and implement low-voltage signal wiring and high-current power harnesses, considering shielding, signal integrity, thermal management, and strain relief.
- Integrate and configure PLCs, HMIs, DAQ systems, sensors, and other industrial automation hardware.
- Develop basic software, scripts, or firmware routines to control test equipment, communicate with test articles, and automate test sequences.
- Perform equipment bring-up, functional verification, troubleshooting, and debugging using multimeters, oscilloscopes, soldering tools, and other electrical test equipment.
- Diagnose electrical faults, wiring issues, component failures, and test-system integration problems.
- Work closely with reliability engineering and hardware design teams to ensure test equipment meets performance, reliability, and safety requirements.
- Follow electrical safety procedures when working with energized equipment and other laboratory hazards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience designing and building custom electrical test equipment, automated test systems, test fixtures, or R&D/manufacturing test beds.
- Experience with PCB/PCBA testing and the electrical infrastructure required to test electronic hardware.
- Proficiency with electrical schematic design and documentation tools such as EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or Altium Designer.
- Hands-on experience with PLCs, HMIs, DAQ systems, power supplies, relays, contactors, and related electrical components.
- Experience with electrical wiring, cable harnesses, component selection, panel assembly, and electrical system integration.
- Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills with practical experience using multimeters, oscilloscopes, soldering irons, and wire crimping tools.
- Understanding of electrical safety, interlocks, emergency stops, fault protection, and safe equipment design.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and hardware interface documentation.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a hands-on engineering environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing BMS hardware test systems or battery-related reliability test equipment.
- Experience building test racks, automated test equipment (ATE), electrical test fixtures, or reliability test benches.
- Familiarity with power electronics, high-current systems, low-voltage control circuits, and electronic hardware validation.
- Basic proficiency with mechanical CAD tools such as SolidWorks or Siemens NX.
- Experience with test automation, scripting, embedded microcontrollers (MCUs), or hardware communication interfaces.
- Knowledge of electrical design standards, grounding, shielding, overload protection, and industrial wiring practices.
- Experience supporting laboratory R&D, electronics manufacturing, or product reliability testing.
