Hiring: Embedded Firmware Test Engineer
Location: In California
Work Arrangement: Onsite, 5 days per week
Employment Type: Full-time / Contract (as applicable)
About The Role
We are seeking a skilled Embedded Firmware Test Engineer to support the verification and validation of Battery Management System (BMS) software. The ideal candidate will have hands‑on experience testing embedded firmware, developing automated test frameworks using Python and pytest, and validating software functionality through Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) testing.
This role requires a strong combination of software testing expertise and electrical hardware debugging skills. The engineer will work closely with firmware, hardware, systems, and validation teams to ensure the reliability, performance, and safety of embedded software used in battery management and energy storage systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and execute automated test scripts and test frameworks using Python and pytest for embedded firmware verification.
- Perform functional, integration, regression, and system-level testing of Battery Management System (BMS) software.
- Design, implement, and execute Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test scenarios to validate firmware behavior under normal, fault, and edge‑case operating conditions.
- Support Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) testing to verify embedded software functionality in simulated environments.
- Validate firmware interactions with hardware components, sensors, communication interfaces, and peripheral devices.
- Perform CAN communication testing, including message validation, signal monitoring, fault injection, and protocol‑level debugging.
- Troubleshoot electrical hardware and firmware issues using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, and other laboratory test equipment.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and hardware interface documentation to identify and resolve test failures.
- Analyze test results, investigate failures, perform root‑cause analysis, and collaborate with development teams to resolve defects.
- Develop and maintain test plans, test procedures, test cases, and verification documentation.
- Track test execution, defects, and verification requirements to ensure adequate test coverage and traceability.
- Support continuous integration and automated regression testing pipelines for embedded firmware.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams to improve test coverage, system reliability, and overall product quality.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Hands‑on experience in embedded firmware testing, software verification, or embedded systems validation.
- Strong programming and test automation skills in Python, including experience with pytest.
- Practical experience testing embedded firmware on physical hardware and debugging software‑hardware interactions.
- Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing, including test execution, troubleshooting, and validation of embedded systems.
- Working knowledge of CAN communication protocols and associated testing and debugging techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and hardware interface specifications.
- Hands‑on experience with electrical laboratory equipment, including oscilloscopes and digital multimeters.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and root‑cause analysis skills.
- Experience developing test cases, documenting test results, reporting defects, and supporting regression testing.
