Job summary

Berkshire Hathaway GUARD Insurance Companies is seeking an experienced Territory Underwriter to manage a defined commercial lines territory. You’ll evaluate risk, price new and renewal business, and build strong agency relationships to drive profitable growth across the region.

You will collaborate with Distribution and business leaders, deliver exceptional service, and travel as needed to meet partners and events. Bonus potential complements a competitive compensation package.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• AU or CPCU designation preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of underwriting in Property, General Liability, Commercial Auto and Workers' Compensation.
• Strong understanding of underwriting practices, risk assessment, and policy structures.
• Familiarity with insurance policy language and coverage forms.
• Data-driven approach to underwriting decisions, with strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate, select, and price new and renewal business within underwriting authority.
• Manage profitability, retention, and growth within an assigned territory.
• Negotiate terms and conditions to secure profitable business opportunities.
• Partner with Distribution and Line of Business leaders to develop territory growth strategies.

• Collaborate with internal teams to identify service improvements and address agency feedback.

What You’ll Do

You'll work closely with Distribution partners, business leaders, and agency stakeholders to identify opportunities, support retention efforts, and deliver exceptional service.

Qualifications

What You’ll Bring

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
• Professional designations such as AU or CPCU preferred
• Minimum of 5 years of underwriting experience in Property, General Liability, Commercial Auto and Workers Compensation
• Strong understanding of underwriting practices, risk assessment, and policy structures
• Familiarity with insurance policy language and coverage forms
• Solid understanding of working with data to support underwriting decisions
• Strong time management, organizational, and prioritization skill
• Clear written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to collaborate effectively across teams
• Self-motivated with strong attention to detail and accountability

Salary Range

$60,000.00-$125,000.00 USD with performance-based bonus potential

In accordance with applicable pay transparency laws, this range represents a good‑faith estimate. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, credentials, geographic location, and other considerations permitted by law.

This role may be based out of our office locations:Scottsdale, AZ; and Rancho Cordova, CA; Rosemont, IL and Plano, TX.
