Job summary

SSA Marine in Long Beach, CA seeks a Terminal Manager to oversee daily gate and cargo-handling operations, coordinate administrative functions, and drive profits while meeting customer standards. You will supervise departmental personnel, participate in hiring and disciplinary actions, ensure safety compliance, manage budgets, and collaborate with other managers to optimize operations.

  • A minimum of 3 years managing a related union labor workforce.
  • A valid CPR certificate, valid driver’s license, and TWIC card are required.
  • Knowledge of terminal and warehouse operations from a vocational education institute, apprenticeship, on-the-job training, and/or similar work experience.
  • Highly organized and flexible.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Detail-oriented and works with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of stowage and stability strongly desired.
  • Knowledge of local unions preferred.
  • Required to observe all safety and health requirements for the terminal environment.
  • Working knowledge of email, scheduling, and Microsoft systems.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise subordinate personnel to ensure work aligns with organizational requirements.
  • Conduct employee training on hazardous materials handling, orientations, quality improvements, and computer usage.
  • Participate in union contract negotiations and settlements of grievances.
  • Implement schedule and policy changes.
  • Ensure continuous improvement of policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
  • Monitor operations for compliance with policies, safety rules, union contracts, and regulations.
  • Promote safe work activities via safety audits and meetings.
  • Monitor spending to ensure expenses align with budgets.
  • Direct activities of staff performing repairs and maintenance to equipment, vehicles, and facilities.
  • Coordinate safety, operational, and equipment support with other managers.
  • Investigate accidents to improve safety procedures.
  • Analyze finances to plan budgets for profits and services.
  • Participate in hiring, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
  • Inventory management and procurement to maintain supplies.

  • Responsible for the supervision of subordinate personnel to ensure that all work is accomplished consistently with organizational requirements.
  • Conduct employee training sessions on subjects such as hazardous material handling, employee orientations, quality improvements, and computer usage.
  • Participate in union contract negotiations and settlements of grievances.
  • Implement schedule and policy changes.
  • Ensure that continuous improvement is being made concerning policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
  • Monitor operations to ensure that staff members comply with administrative policies and procedures, safety rules, union contracts, and government regulations.
  • Promote safe work activities by conducting safety audits, attending company safety meetings, and meeting with individual staff members.
  • Monitor spending to ensure that expenses are consistent with approved budgets.
  • Direct activities of staff performing repairs and maintenance to equipment, vehicles, and facilities.
  • Coordinate safety, operational, and equipment support with other managers.
  • Conduct investigations to determine causes of accidents and to improve safety procedures.
  • Analyze expenditures and other financial information to develop plans, policies, and budgets for increasing profits and improving services.
  • Participate in hiring, disciplinary actions, and terminations of staff.
  • Inventory management to ensure there is a sufficient supply in office inventory; this would include ordering supplies, maintaining an organized supply area, waybill loading, cost analysis, and projection.
  • Maintain company values, rules, policies, and procedures to fulfill the company mission, as well as productive relationships with customers and vendors.
  • Responsible for special tasks requested by management.
Terminal Manager

The Terminal Manager supervises all departmental personnel and is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the daily gate and terminal cargo-handling operations and associated administrative functions to meet customer standards and maximize profits. Participates in the discipline and employment processes by making decisions to hire, promote/demote, and terminate employment.

  • The position may also be required to travel throughout the terminal

  • The ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast-moving equipment.
