Job summary

Job description

The Department of Education & Early Learning's (DEEL) mission is to ensure that all Seattle children have the greatest opportunity to succeed in school and in life. Ultimately helping scholars graduate from school, ready for college, and a career.

As part of this mission, DEEL is hosting the Upward Bound program. Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

Tutors are responsible for mentoring, tutoring, and providing instructional aid to support 9th – 12th grade students enrolled in the program. Tutors will work with the Academic Youth Counselors, Program Manager and Coordinator, and mentor students facing educational barriers to progress through their academic pathway so they may succeed in high school and beyond.

DEEL is seeking two (2) Temporary Upward Bound Tutors (Youth Supervisor) for the academic year, who will be responsible for mentoring, tutoring, and providing instructional aid to support 9th – 12th grade students enrolled in the program. Tutors will work with the Academic Youth Counselors, Program Manager and Coordinator, and mentor students facing educational barriers to progress through their academic pathway so they may succeed in high school and beyond. This is an opportunity to build leadership skills and gain experience in working with diverse youth from underserved communities.

Tutors will support the Upward Bound program throughout the academic year with after school tutoring Monday-Thursday at Garfield and Rainier Beach High Schools and may have the opportunity to continue to provide part-time tutoring services support through the summer 2027 program. Ideal candidates for the tutor positions will be able to tutor math (through Calculus), sciences and/or English reading and writing.

Here’s what you’ll be doing to support the Upward Bound program:

• Providing one-to-one or small group tutoring, remotely or in-person to 9th-12th grade students in Math (Algebra 2 through Calculus), Sciences (biology, chemistry, physics), English (ELA/writing).
• Supporting leadership development, college and career readiness, goal setting, career exploration and life skills by developing and conducting workshops remotely or in person.
• Maintaining accurate records of tutoring and workshop activities by students and volunteers.

You will be successful in role if you are:

• Committed to serving diverse families in the community
• Proficient in one or more of the following skills areas – Math (Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus), English (reading and writing), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics.
• Experienced as a successful Upward Bound program participant or similar program that understands the program and can support students' success in achieving personal and programmatic goals.
• Responsible, have strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
• Can work with minimum supervision

In addition, you have experience in:

• Tutoring one-on-one and/or small group settings
• Mentoring in leadership development settings
• Working with students from diverse cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds (volunteer or paid

In addition to the qualities mentioned above, you will need to possess the below required qualifications (or a combination of education, training or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class):

• An Associate's Degree

OR

• Equivalent of two years of successful college-level work

This is a part-time, non-benefited temporary position that is civil service exempt and is eligible for overtime. These temporary positions are classified as a Youth Supervisor 1 and is expected to last through the academic school year and end on June 15, 2027, with the possibility of being extended through the summer.

Compensation

The full pay range for this classification is $24.87 – $24.87 hourly.

• Workers will receive premium pay in lieu of benefits.

Working Schedule

Employees will be expected to work in-person four days a week, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm and Wednesdays 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm at the Garfield and Rainier Beach High Schools. Individual schedules will be based on agreement between the employee and their supervisor.
