Job Description
Class Title: Teacher
Characteristics of the Class: Under the supervision of the school principal, responsible for the instruction, progress, and discipline of all pupils in assigned classes, and performs related duties as required.
Essential Functions
- Responsible for instructional planning, including providing written lesson plans and preparation aligned with instructional objectives.
- Establish positive learning expectations and evaluate pupils' progress, maintaining accurate records.
- Implement instructional methods based on contemporary learning theories and teaching methodologies.
- Participate in developing and implementing new teaching techniques.
- Maintain engaging bulletin boards and interest areas reflecting pupils' current work.
- Exhibit and apply knowledge of curriculum content and instructional levels.
- Participate in programs to improve student attendance and promote anti-vandalism initiatives.
- Establish and maintain reasonable classroom and school ground rules consistent with CPS' discipline policies.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and seating charts.
- Encourage student growth in self-discipline and positive self-concept.
- Foster fairness and respect in teacher-pupil relationships.
- Communicate with parents and guardians regarding academic progress, attendance, and conduct.
- Participate in staff meetings, in-service training, and utilize available resources.
- May coordinate and attend extracurricular activities and field trips.
Minimum Qualifications
- Successful completion of all student teaching requirements and coursework for Illinois teaching certification.
License Requirements
- Possession of a valid Illinois State Board of Education teaching license: PEL or ELS, endorsed for this position.

- Knowledge of subject matter and contemporary teaching practices.
- Ability to adapt instruction to student needs and work collaboratively with staff and community.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements
Light work: exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently; physical activities include stooping, reaching, handling objects, talking, hearing, and visual acuity tasks.
