Job summary

Ecologyst in Sitka, AK seeks a pedestrian traffic guide to ensure safe passage during days with cruise ship visitation. You will guide traffic and monitor pedestrian and vehicular movement downtown.

You must be comfortable working outdoors in inclement weather, stand and walk for long periods, and obtain a Flagging Level 1 certification within two weeks of hire. The role requires direct public interaction and adherence to safety procedures.

Qualifications

Job description

The primary function of this position is to ensure the safe passage of pedestrians in the downtown area on days with significant cruise ship visitation by guiding traffic and monitoring pedestrian and vehicular movement.

Essential Duties

• Detering jaywalking using verbal instruction, hand signs, or other traffic safety devices


• Directing pedestrians to the nearest designated crossing


• Guiding and controlling pedestrian traffic at designated crossings using hand signals, signs, and other control devices


• Monitoring traffic flow and identifying potential hazards


• Making pedestrians aware of traffic safety rules and procedures


• Providing assistance to downtown visitors

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Work directly with the public to provide instruction, information, and assistance


• Enforce rules in an assertive, professional, and respectful manner


• Be outside in inclement weather conditions


• Stand and walk for long periods of time


• Pass a flagger certification exam and test paid for by employer

Minimum Qualifications and Other Job Requirements/Expectations

• Must be 18 years of age or older


• Must hold, or be able to obtain within fourteen (14) days of hiring, Flagging Level 1 Certification through a State of Alaska DOT approved provider

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Working Conditions

• Works outside on sidewalks and roadways in the downtown area


• Generally works between 10AM and 4PM


• Will be exposed to inclement weather conditions


• Will be expected to work some weekends

Specific Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk on concrete and asphalt surfaces for prolonged periods of time
