Job summary

Ecologyst in Sitka, Alaska is seeking a pedestrian crossing guide to help visitors move safely in downtown areas during cruise ship visits. You will deter jaywalking, direct pedestrians to crossings, and assist downtown visitors, performing duties outdoors from roughly 10 AM to 4 PM, with some weekends.

Candidates must be 16 or older and obtain a State DOT Flagging Level 1 Certification within 14 days of hire.

Qualifications

• Must be 16 years of age or older.
• Must obtain Flagging Level 1 Certification within fourteen (14) days of hiring through a State of Alaska DOT approved provider.

Job description

The primary function of this position is to ensure the safe passage of pedestrians in the downtown area on days with significant cruise ship visitation by guiding and monitoring pedestrian movement.

Essential Duties

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Working Conditions

• Works outside on sidewalks in the downtown area
• Generally works between 10AM and 4PM
• Will be exposed to inclement weather conditions
• Will be expected to work some weekends

• Ability to stand and walk on concrete and asphalt surfaces for prolonged periods of time

• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities which permits the employee to communicate effectively
• Sufficient vision and powers of observation which permits the employee to perform assigned tasks, follow traffic safety rules and protocols, and observe and act upon potential safety hazards
• Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes which permits the employee to function in pedestrian walkway and crossing environments
