Job summary

Holland America-Princess in Sitka, Alaska, seeks a vigilant pedestrian guide to ensure safe passage in the downtown area during cruise ship visitation. You will direct pedestrians at crossings, deter jaywalking, and assist downtown visitors.

Work outdoors in varying weather, standing and walking for long periods. Must be 18+ and obtain Flagger Level 1 Certification within 14 days of hiring; shifts generally run 10AM–4PM, with some weekends.

Primary Purpose of Job & Essential Duties/Responsibilities

The primary function of this position is to ensure the safe passage of pedestrians in the downtown area on days with significant cruise ship visitation by guiding traffic and monitoring pedestrian and vehicular movement.

Essential Duties:

• Detering jaywalking using verbal instruction, hand signs, or other traffic safety devices
• Directing pedestrians to the nearest designated crossing
• Guiding and controlling pedestrian traffic at designated crossings using hand signals, signs, and other control devices
• Monitoring traffic flow and identifying potential hazards
• Making pedestrians aware of traffic safety rules and procedures
• Providing assistance to downtown visitors

Ability to:

Minimum Qualifications & Other Job Requirements/Expectations

Must be 18 years of age or older

Must hold, or be able to obtain within fourteen (14) days of hiring, Flagging Level 1 Certification through a State of Alaska DOT approved provider

Working Conditions

Works outside on sidewalks and roadways in the downtown area

Generally works between 10AM and 4PM

Will be exposed to inclement weather conditions

Will be expected to work some weekends

Specific Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk on concrete and asphalt surfaces for prolonged periods of time

Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities which permits the employee to communicate effectively

Sufficient vision and powers of observation which permits the employee to perform assigned tasks, follow traffic safety rules and protocols, and observe and act upon potential safety hazards
