Position Goals
  • The Custodian reports directly to the Logistics Coordinator and is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment for students, employees, and visitors across Camden County College facilities. The Custodian performs a variety of custodial, housekeeping, building support, event setup, and light labor duties, including campus deliveries and furniture moves, while ensuring College facilities are maintained in a manner that supports learning, teaching, and daily operations.

Job Description
General Custodial Responsibilities
  • Clean, sanitize, and maintain classrooms, offices, laboratories, meeting rooms, hallways, stairwells, restrooms, athletic facilities, common areas, and other assigned campus spaces.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers
  • Dust furniture, fixtures, windowsills, ledges, blinds, shelving, and other surfaces.
  • Vacuum carpeted areas
  • Spot clean and shampoo carpets
  • Clean walls, doors, partitions, windows, mirrors, glass surfaces, whiteboards, chalkboards, and other fixtures.
  • Clean, disinfect, and restock restrooms, locker rooms, shower areas, fountains, and other high-touch surfaces using approved cleaning and disinfecting procedures.
  • Replace soap, paper towels, tissue, and other restroom and custodial supplies.
  • Straighten furniture and return classrooms and meeting rooms to standard configurations after use.
Facility Monitoring and Maintenance Support
  • Inspect assigned areas and promptly report maintenance needs
  • Monitor facilities for hazards including leaks, spills, pests, trip hazards, or other safety concerns.
  • Follow all College safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment ( PPE ).
  • Safely operate and maintain custodial tools, vehicles, and equipment.
Athletic and Specialized Facilities
  • Clean and maintain gymnasiums, locker rooms, coaches’ offices, fitness areas, pool facilities, and related athletic spaces.
  • Clean and disinfect showers, locker rooms, athletic equipment areas, and restroom facilities.
  • Sweep under bleachers and maintain athletic floors using approved cleaning methods.
Cafeteria and Common Areas
  • Maintain cafeterias, dining areas, lounges, lobbies, and public gathering spaces in a clean and sanitary condition.
Event Support
  • Set up and break down tables, chairs, podiums, staging, and other equipment for meetings, classes, and special events.
  • Review daily work schedules and event requests to ensure timely room setups.
  • Return rooms to their standard configuration following events.
Seasonal Responsibilities
  • During academic breaks and summer months, perform deep cleaning and preventive maintenance activities including:
  • Strip, scrub, wax, and refinish floors.
  • Shampoo and extract carpets.
  • Thoroughly clean classrooms, offices, and common areas.
  • Assist with building preparation for the start of each academic semester.
  • Assist with office relocations, furniture moves, and departmental projects.
Emergency Response
  • Respond to emergencies including spills, flooding, inclement weather, snow and ice removal, water intrusion, bodily fluid cleanup, and other facility emergencies.
  • Assist with emergency building support and operational needs as directed.
Equipment and Vehicles
  • Maintain assigned custodial equipment, vehicles, and tools in clean, safe, and proper working condition.
  • Report equipment malfunctions or repair needs promptly.
  • Safely store equipment, chemicals, and supplies in accordance with College procedures and applicable safety regulations.
Communication
  • Report building concerns, maintenance issues, and safety hazards promptly.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
  • Respond professionally to service requests while following established work order procedures.
Other Duties
  • Perform campus deliveries, furniture moves, and other logistical support assignments.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Logistics Coordinator, Manager of Projects and Physical Plant, or other authorized supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to safely operate College vehicles, custodial equipment, tools, and machinery.
  • Ability to read and understand operating instructions, safety information, and work orders, and maintain basic records as required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining a high standard of quality and productivity.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 70 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at varying heights when necessary.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of custodial work, including prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motion.
