Job summary

The New School is seeking a Temporary Overhire Hair and Makeup Supervisor for the College of Performing Arts. Responsible for delivering hair and makeup services to actors, maintaining design consistency, and working closely with the production team.

This position is on an as-needed basis without guaranteed weekly hours. Candidates should have experience as a Hair and Makeup Artisan and exhibit excellent communication and customer service skills. The role primarily requires in-person work on campus, with potential hybrid arrangements.

• Participate in production strike: clean brushes, wash wigs, dispose of unhygienic products.
• Monitor actors for discomfort or adverse reactions.

Position Title

Temporary Overhire Hair and Makeup Supervisor – Performance Operations, Theater & Opera

Position Overview

Works in the College of Performing Arts, reporting to the Costume Shop Manager. Responsible for providing hair and makeup services to actors and performers during productions, coordinating with designers and crew to maintain consistency with design intent.

Overhire Position Details

This is an overhire position without regular or guaranteed weekly hours. Opportunities are scheduled on an as‑needed basis by the Costume department.

Responsibilities

• Apply makeup, style hair, install extensions or wigs as required.
• Consult with actors about hair and makeup needs, allergies, and practices.
• Communicate effectively with actors, designers, and the Costume Shop Manager to ensure satisfaction.
• Assist with inventory management of hair and makeup products and tools.
• Participate in production strike: clean brushes, wash wigs, dispose of unhygienic products, and restore inventory.
• Monitor actors for discomfort or adverse reactions and report incidents to stage management and the Costume Shop Manager.
• Follow shop management’s instructions and additional duties as assigned.

Work Mode

Primarily in‑person on campus; hybrid arrangements may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis and must be approved in advance.

Salary

$30.00 per hour.
