The New School's College of Performing Arts is seeking an Overhire Props Artisan to join its Performance Operations – Props Department. This on‑campus, as‑needed role supports the Mannes School of Music, School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and School of Drama.

Candidates should have 1–3 years in theatrical properties, strong carpentry/sewing/upholstery skills, and comfort with tools. The position pays $27.00/hour with no guaranteed weekly hours.

Job description

The College of Performing Arts (CoPA) at The New School is seeking a highly qualified Overhire Props Artisan to join its Performance Operations – Props Department Staff. The Props Department is responsible for the creation, alteration, and sourcing of all props for productions in the Mannes School of Music, School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and School of Drama.

The Overhire Props Artisan is a qualified and organized collaborator who can follow instructions and work independently. Someone who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced, and highly team-oriented environment.The Overhire Props Artisan is delegated as needed to work on prop builds, alterations, storage pulls, and/ or shopping runs.

Formed in 2015, the College of Performing Arts draws together the Mannes School of Music, the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the School of Drama. College of Performing Arts students are actors, musicians, performers, writers, improvisers, creative technologists, entrepreneurs, composers, arts managers, and multidisciplinary artists. Our community collaborates with colleagues across The New School in a wide array of disciplines, from the visual arts and fashion design, to the social sciences, public policy, advocacy, and more.

This is an overhire position without regular or guaranteed weekly hours. Opportunities for work will be scheduled on an as-needed basis by the props department. This position may be renewed pending institutional need and availability of funding.

Qualifications

• Comfortable with power tools and heights
• Strong carpentry, sewing, and upholstery skills
• Experienced or able to learn and develop fluency in The New School's suite of applications including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Workday, and Adobe Photoshop

Preferred Qualifications

• Driver's license and comfort driving a cargo van
• Experience in an educational or teaching environment

WORK MODE

This position is primarily in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement.

HOURLY RATE:

$27.00/hour
