Job summary

Qualifications

Position/Role Overview

The College of Performing Arts at The New School is seeking an overhire Stitcher for the Performance Operations – Costume Department Staff. The Stitcher will support garment construction and alterations in collaboration with the Costume Designer, Design Team, and Production Staff. This self‑driven role reports to the Costume Shop Manager and coordinates with the design team(s) and shop management to ensure timely and safe production of garments for productions such as School of Drama, Mannes Operas, and School of Jazz. The position is overhire with no guaranteed weekly hours; work will be scheduled on an as‑needed basis and may be renewed based on institutional need and funding availability.

Core Capabilities, Primary Duties, and Responsibilities
  • Provide support during garment fittings for upcoming productions
  • Attend all scheduled shifts in person as directed by shop management
  • Hand stitch and machine stitch garments using appropriate machinery
  • Follow all fitting notes and shop management’s instructions attentively
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of experience in patternmaking
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in costume construction, stitching, and alterations
  • Strong knowledge of current techniques, materials, and repertoire relevant to theatrical costuming
  • Ability to follow guidance from leaders throughout the production process
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Arts or higher degree, or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience in tailoring, historical costuming, couture stitching, or draping
  • Experience working in an academic setting or with students/young professionals
Work Mode

This position is primarily on‑site at campus. Some nights and weekends may be required. Costume Shop hours are 10:00am–5:00pm Monday through Friday. Schedule adjustments may be made to accommodate external venue time constraints.

Salary Range

$27.00 per hour
