The City of Millville is seeking a Temporary Laborer I in the Water Department for a six-month assignment. The role involves outdoor, hands-on work maintaining the water distribution system and grounds, with a focus on safety and reliability. Applicants must be 18+, able to lift and carry, and work in varied weather conditions. A New Jersey driver's license is required, and a CDL is a plus.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Assist with repairs to water leaks and damaged lines.

• Operate hand and power tools under supervision.
• Set up safe work zones around excavation sites.
• Perform lawn maintenance and restore grounds after repairs.
• Keep work areas and vehicles clean.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

The City of Millville is seeking a motivated, dependable, and hardworking individual to join our Water Department as a Temporary Laborer I. If you enjoy working outdoors, completing hands-on projects, and making a meaningful contribution to your community, this is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in municipal water operations.

• Employment Type: Temporary, six-month position
• Hourly Rate: $17.00 per hour
• Schedule: Monday through Friday, 40 hours
• Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• Department: Water Department

What You’ll Do

As a Temporary Laborer I, you will work alongside Water Department personnel to help maintain and repair the City’s water distribution system and surrounding grounds. This is an active, hands-on position performed primarily outdoors in varied weather and environmental conditions.

Responsibilities may include:

• Assisting with repairs to water leaks and damaged water lines
• Supporting water service line replacements
• Assisting with hydrant maintenance, testing, and inspections
• Helping install, maintain, and repair water distribution equipment
• Loading, moving, and transporting tools, materials, equipment, and supplies
• Using hand tools, power tools, and other equipment under appropriate supervision
• Setting up and maintaining safe work zones around excavation and repair sites
• Performing lawn maintenance and restoring grounds following water system repairs
• Cleaning work areas, vehicles, tools, and equipment
• Performing other related duties as assigned

Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of hire and must be able to:

• Perform physically demanding manual labor for extended periods
• Lift, carry, push, pull, dig, bend, and kneel
• Work safely in and around trenches and other excavated areas
• Work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and other varying weather conditions
• Safely use common hand tools, materials, and equipment
• Work independently and collaboratively as part of a crew
• Follow verbal and written instructions, procedures, and work assignments
• Learn to operate tools, vehicles, equipment, and machinery used in water distribution and maintenance operations
• Follow all applicable safety rules, procedures, and precautions
• Use electronic or manual recordkeeping and reporting systems as required
• Read, write, understand, and communicate effectively in English as necessary to perform the essential functions of the position; American Sign Language and Braille may also be accepted forms of communication
• Demonstrate reliability, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to public service

Preferred Experience

Previous experience in any of the following areas is helpful but not required:

• Plumbing or pipefitting
• Water service lines or underground utilities
• Municipal or private water operations
• Water main or service line installation and repair
• Excavation or construction
• Lawn and grounds maintenance
• Hydrant maintenance or inspection

Entry-level candidates who are willing to learn are encouraged to apply.

License Requirements

A valid New Jersey driver’s license is required. Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus.
