Job summary

The Maryland Institute College of Art seeks an Evening/Weekend Access Services Assistant to support the library's service desk, supervise student workers, and maintain the space during evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities include circulation, holds, shelving, and assisting patrons with overdue materials and fines, while collaborating with staff and faculty to offer student-facing programs. Background in customer service and library experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of library experience.
  • Willingness to learn and flexibility in schedule.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, problem solving skills, attention to detail and accuracy, and ability to set and keep deadlines.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.

  • Assist in shelving library materials and maintaining the collection’s appearance.
  • Reshelf special collections materials as needed.
  • Process books, including wrapping and labeling.
  • Collaborate with staff, students, and faculty to develop and provide student-facing programming.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Overview

The Evening/Weekend Access Services Assistant engages in the full range of Access Services functions, including managing the service desk, supervising student workers, and overseeing the physical library space during evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities
  • Assists with circulation of library items, fines, stacks maintenance, interlibrary loan, reserves, and related tasks.
  • Assists with pulling, processing, and expiring holds.
  • Supervises student employees when covering the Access Services Desk.
  • Manages the desk when student staff are unavailable.
  • Answers inquiries concerning overdue materials, recalls, and bills.
  • Assists in shelving library materials, shelf reading, and maintaining the appearance of the library collection.
  • Reshelves special collections materials as needed.
  • Processes books, including wrapping and labeling.

Qualifications

Reporting To

Student staff on duty.

Conditions of Employment
  • Background Check required.
  • Position requires evening and/or weekend work.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Occasional standing, walking, sitting, use of hands, reaching, balancing, stooping, speaking, and hearing.
  • Occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.
  • Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Exposure to weather conditions; minimal noise; ear protection required at times.
Required Training
  • Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans.
  • Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment.
