Job summary

ODL in Zeeland, MI is seeking a Tempering Process Technician to oversee the glass tempering line, including cutting, seaming, and furnace operations. You will plan and direct daily activities to meet production while safeguarding safety, quality, and equipment standards.

You will train operators, monitor schedules and data, coordinate with Planning, and drive continuous improvement through Lean practices. This role requires hands-on mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot MES/ERP

Responsibilities

• Set up, operate, and troubleshoot all equipment including glass storage/cutting system, seamer, washer, and tempering furnace.
• Proficiency in training operators at each station of the line.
• Monitor daily schedules; coordinate with Planning for changes.
• Coordinate with internal customers to ensure 100% on-time delivery.
• Assist in loading glass packs from racks/crates to storage system.
• Coordinate end-of-line glass packing and sequencing.
• Ensure MES software operates as designed; escalate issues to engineering.
• Oversee scrap reporting and accuracy.
• Assist in tracking department metrics and action plans.
• Analyze work area and ensure PPE and safety compliance; report near misses.
• Lead Lean continuous improvement activities; encourage problem solving.
• Conduct routine product audits per SGCC specs; perform audits with engineering.

Position Overview: The Tempering Process Technician position will oversee the cutting, seaming, and glass tempering processes. Plans, organizes, and directs the daily activities of the team members with the objective of completing daily production needs while ensuring that safety, quality, and operational standards are followed. Makes decisions for area of responsibility and serves as the first responder when team members need assistance.

Essential Job Functions

• Setup, operate, and troubleshoot all equipment including the glass storage/cutting system, automatic seamer, washer, and tempering furnace.
• Proficiency in training operators at each station of the line.
• Monitor daily schedules, ensuring proper data loading and sequencing throughout the entire process from glass cutter load to temper unload. Coordinate with Planning if/when changes need to be made.
• Coordinates with internal customers to ensure 100% on time delivery.
• Assist in loading of glass packs from racks/crates to glass storage system.
• Coordinate end of line glass packing and sequencing.
• Ensure glass sequencing and MES software are operating as designed; escalation to engineering if issues arise.
• Oversight of scrap reporting and accuracy.
• Assists with the daily tracking of department metrics and action plans assigned.
• Analyzes work area and ensure that tools and equipment meet PPE and safety requirements. Reports near misses and safety catches promptly.
• Drives accountability and performance of the team.
• Leads 2 Second Lean continuous improvement activities in the area. Assists with improving safety, quality, productivity, and service KPI’s. Actively encourages team members’ problem solving and idea conception.
• Conduct routine product audits according to SGCC specifications.
• Conduct other equipment, product, and process audits as developed by engineering to ensure compliance.
• Assists with creating and updating SOP’s and checklists.
• Backfill for operators at any position if necessary.
• Perform designed experiments, under direction from engineering and/or maintenance to optimize recipes, make equipment adjustments, reduce scrap or improve quality.

Candidate Requirements

• High school diploma or GED; or one-year related experience and training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrates scientific thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrates the ability to lead and motivate others.
• Basic computer skills such as MS Word, Excel, and ability to sort and present data in graphical form.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
• Good mechanical knowledge to be able to effectively interface with engineering/maintenance team.
• Experience with different software systems (MES, ERP, etc) and ability to diagnose and correct day-to-day issues.
• Self-directed individual who can keep themselves productive throughout the workday with limited direction from a supervisor.
• Must be able to read, understand, and operate all types of measuring devices.
• Experience setting up and troubleshooting manufacturing equipment.
