Job Summary

Under the direction of the supervising teacher or administrator, Temporary Support Assistants (TSA) assist teachers with the physical, emotional, behavioral, and instructional needs of students at the Preschool/PreK, elementary and secondary grade levels. TSA provides supervision, instructional support, data collection, and behavior management throughout the school day, both inside the school building and at off‑site work locations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Participate in routine supervision of students throughout the school day in the building and/or worksite/community settings, including assistance on/off bus, lifting, pushing students on equipment, and monitoring entry/exit.


• Assist students in developing proper social behavior, personal hygiene, and self‑help skills—e.g., toileting, feeding, and grooming—when assigned for the school day or at off‑site locations.


• Support students during instruction and other curriculum tasks by reinforcing subjects introduced by the teacher in one‑on‑one or small groups and implementing instructional plans as directed by the job coach or teacher.


• Observe and manage student behavior in classrooms, lunch areas, playgrounds, and other learning environments according to approved procedures.


• Observe and gather data regarding student performance on instructional and behavioral goals and provide data to the supervising teacher.


• Implement behavior strategies and supports for students with social, emotional, and behavioral concerns.


• Adhere to AACPS policies and procedures while assisting students and staff in all settings.


• Participate in professional development, workshops, and in‑service training for related care needs.


• Perform other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

• High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate (required).


• Formal academic courses or training in child development with specific applications to special education (preferred).

Experience

• None required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Patience and ability to work with students who have physical, mental, emotional, and/or multiple disabilities.


• Punctual, regular, and predictable attendance.


• Ability to employ various teaching styles to meet diverse learner needs.


• Effective communication with diverse populations.


• Proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., video/web conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite).

Licenses and Certifications

• Hold or be eligible for a Class C non‑commercial driver’s license issued by Maryland or state of legal residence (MVA/DMV) (required).


• Daily reliable transportation access.

Driving Requirements

• Driving is required to conduct Board business within the scope of employment.


• Personal vehicle required.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

• Standing, walking, sitting, keyboarding, talking, hearing, and driving activities as described; up to 50 lb lift (to vary).


• Travel up to 20 % daily within the county to assist at other schools, parks, libraries, etc.
