Job summary

Halifax County Government seeks a Telecommunicator to coordinate dispatch of law enforcement, EMS, fire, and other responders for emergencies and non-emergencies. You will work at a communications console for extended periods, analyze radio traffic, and maintain precise typing while communicating with the public and responders.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be able to obtain DCI, Basic Telecommunicator, EMD, and CPR certifications.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent.
• Ability to obtain/maintain DCI, Basic Telecommunicator, EMD and CPR certifications.
• Experience in computerized dispatching or in law-enforcement, EMS, or fire dispatching is preferred.
• Knowledge of the Halifax County area is a plus.
• Typing speed of 35 wpm is required.

Description

This position performs technical work dispatching law enforcement, medical, fire, rescue and other equipment and personnel in response to emergency and non-emergency situations. Other requirements include working at a communications console for extended periods of time, analyzing communications, detailed & accurate typing, and speaking distinctly. Applicants will need to possess the ability to deal courteously with the public and emergency responders under stressful conditions. Position involves working varying shifts, which will include weekend and holiday schedules.

Requirements

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain DCI (Division of Criminal Investigations), Basic Telecommunicator, EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) and CPR certifications. Prefer persons with experience in computerized dispatching or in law-enforcement, EMS, or fire dispatching, and the knowledge of the Halifax County area. This position requires working scheduled shifts. The position requires the ability to type 35 wpm.
