Technology Support Specialist - Department of Technology

Job Description

The Albemarle County Public Schools Department of Technology is actively recruiting a Technology Support Specialist to join our team. The successful candidate will provide support for personal computers, iPads, peripherals, and other related technology equipment; provide software and network connectivity support to promote the effective use of technology by students, administrators, and instructional staff. This individual facilitates the effective operation of all types of technology in the building and will work with multiple school sites in a technology‑rich environment. Excellent communication skills and technical knowledge are required.

Essential Functions
  • Consults with teachers, administrators, and students about technical resources and assistance to meet their needs;
  • Works collaboratively on school, department, and division‑level teams, assisting with testing, configuration, and roll‑out of applications, updates, and network hardware;
  • Guarantees the availability of computer systems for high‑stakes testing;
  • Provides assistance with scheduled equipment relocation and new equipment;
  • Communicates with clients regarding system changes and issues, problem resolution, and upcoming projects;
  • Prioritizes and resolves incident tickets for specific sites, ensuring all customers are supported in a timely and effective manner;
  • Works in a fast‑paced environment and balances multiple tasks at once;
  • Serves as project manager or direct support partner for technology‑related projects at specific sites or at the division‑level, including Student‑led Technology Teams;
  • May develop and lead cross‑training for other technical staff on specific projects or products;
  • Ensures departmental quality through regular checks and appropriate actions;
  • Maintains professional relationships and open communications with instructional, administrative, and classified staff to ensure smooth operations during standard and non‑standard usage and maintenance;
  • May serve as the division‑level contact for one or more technical projects or products;
  • Responsible for inventory/asset management projects and processes within 1 to 5 assigned sites, maintaining accurate information;
  • Participates as a collaborative member of the Technology Support Team;
  • Understands and adheres to Board policies and procedures;
  • Serves as technical advisor and leader in student‑run help desks and programs at the school level;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable functional knowledge with excellent interpersonal and technical skills. Ability to manage a complex workload across multiple sites; diagnose and resolve complex issues with a variety of technology hardware and software platforms; engage in creative and productive problem solving in classrooms, libraries, and service areas. Must exhibit empathy, attention to detail, commitment to tasks, customer‑centric service delivery, proactive communication, collaboration with teachers and staff, support users at various technical levels, and proper documentation of incidents and issues.

Education and Experience

A bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems or a combination of education, technical certifications, and related work experience. Strong communication and organizational skills; strong working knowledge of Active Directory, Windows 10 client environment, MAC, and Apple iOS required. Demonstrated ability to learn new technical skills quickly and solve complex technical problems effectively. Appropriate A+ and vendor certifications preferred. Must hold or be eligible to obtain relevant brand certifications and routinely apply such knowledge in a complex educational environment. The successful TSS demonstrates exceptional customer service across a variety of user groups. Special requirement: possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts

Work typically involves sitting, walking, and standing, with occasional bending, lifting, and carrying items. May require climbing ladders up to 16 feet and working in tight and confined spaces. Conditions may be dusty and dirty with constant low‑level noise. Frequent handling of small fragile components and large components up to 50 pounds. Continuous telephone communication required. Regular use of computers, printers, and peripherals. Frequent vehicle operation for travel within the School Division. Interactions are generally cooperative, requiring tact and diplomacy. Time‑critical tasks may arise to meet organizational deadlines. Ability to work in small closed areas without heating or air conditioning and with electrical equipment is required.
