Job summary

IES Communications is hiring a Technician II - Structured Cabling to lead small installer crews and coordinate daily workloads while upholding safety and quality standards. You will install outlets, terminate jacks, mount racks and panels, and perform cabling tests in support of on-site projects.

The role requires hands-on expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to document work orders and ensure timely completion of tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Minimum two years of experience in telecommunications or related technical field with ability to supervise others.
  • Proficiency with listed tools.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and project documents, including specs and quality requirements.
  • Knowledge of universal communications color codes.
  • Meet company minimum driving standards.

Responsibilities

  • Install work-area outlets, terminate CAT 3/5, mount face plates and boxes per standards.
  • Build closets with backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels and grounding.
  • Test horizontal/riser cables for continuity and troubleshoot faults.
  • Identify active voice/data circuits and coordinate crew activities.
  • Complete paperwork — timesheets, work orders, transfers, etc.
  • Adhere to safety/quality standards and participate in training.
  • Carry out other assigned responsibilities.

Job description

Job Summary

Technician II - Structured Cabling performs the technical responsibilities of a Cable Installer and functions as a lead member of a technical team. The Technician coordinates small groups of installers to perform daily workload while adhering to company safety and quality standards.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Install work‑area outlets for floor or wall, terminate CAT 3 and CAT 5 jacks, mount face plates and surface‑mount boxes, and adhere to IES Commercial labeling standards.
  • Build closets by installing backboards, cross‑connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic hardware, and grounding for racks and equipment. Complete all IDC connections such as terminating 110/66 blocks and patch panels.
  • Perform testing of horizontal and riser cable for continuity, use a volt‑ohmmeter, and troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transposed pairs.
  • Identify active voice or data circuits.
  • Assume responsibility for crew performance, provide necessary training, coordinate personnel and timelines to complete projects.
  • Accurately complete all IES Communications paperwork on time (timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers, etc.).
  • Adhere to company, customer and industry quality and safety standards and participate in related training.
  • Carry out other responsibilities as assigned.
Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Act as the company liaison for interface with customer representatives.
  • Possess proven problem‑solving and critical thinking skills and read/write proficiency.
  • Work at heights, on ladders and in confined spaces; lift up to 50 lb and move up to 75 lb.
  • Endure long periods of standing, walking or working in inclement weather with physical strength and agility required for lifting and moving heavy objects.
  • See and distinguish different colors, read small print, and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
  • Travel within the branch or regional territory as needed.
  • Maintain regular attendance and have adequate transportation to the jobsite.
Tools
  • Screwdriver (regular and Phillips), drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips with belt sheath, pliers (needle nose and channel locks), hammer, wrench set, cable stripper, flashlight, and gloves.
  • Trade tools: punch tool with 110 block and 66 block blade, 6/8 position combo crimp tool.
Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in telecommunications or a related technical field and ability to supervise others.
  • Proficiency with the listed tools.
  • Skill level to interpret blueprints and project documents, including specifications, reporting, and quality requirements.
  • Knowledge of universal communications color codes.
  • Meet company minimum driving standards.
