Job summary

IES Communications is seeking a Technician II - Structured Cabling to perform technical responsibilities of a Cable Installer and may lead small groups of installers, coordinating daily workload while adhering to company safety and quality standards.

The role involves installing work area outlets, terminating CAT3 & CAT5, mounting face plates, building closets, wiring grounding, testing circuits, and supervising crew performance. Experience with blueprints and color codes is required.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required; 2+ years in telecommunications or related field with supervisory ability.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and project documents; knowledge of universal color codes.
  • Proficiency with listed tools and strong safety compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Install grounding for racks and cables; perform testing and fault troubleshooting.

Job Summary

The Technician II - Structured Cabling performs technical responsibilities of a Cable Installer and may lead small groups of installers. The role coordinates daily workload while adhering to Company safety and quality standards.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Install a work area outlet for floor or wall and terminate CAT 3 & CAT 5 jacks; mount face plates and surface mount boxes; adhere to IES COMMERCIAL labeling standards.
  • Build closets by mounting and installing backboards, cross connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic components and related hardware.
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment and cables as required.
  • Complete all IDC connections (e.g., terminate 110/66 blocks and patch panels).
  • Perform testing: continuity tests on horizontal and riser cables; use a volt-ohmmeter; troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on horizontal and riser cables.
  • Identify active voice or data circuits.
  • Supervise crew performance, provide necessary training, and coordinate personnel and timeline to complete projects.
  • Fully complete all IES Communications paperwork accurately and on time (timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers, and others as required).
  • Adhere to and participate in all Company, customer, and industry quality and safety standards and regulations.
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned.

  • Proven problem-solving and critical thinking skills; ability to read and write effectively.
  • Work at heights, on a ladder, and in confined spaces; lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.
  • Endure long periods of standing, walking, or working in inclement weather; possess sufficient physical strength and agility to lift and move heavy objects.
  • Color vision, ability to read small print, and ability to hear and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
  • Willing and able to travel within the branch and/or regional territory as needed.
  • Regular attendance and reliable transportation to job sites.
  • Required tools: screwdriver (regular and Phillips), drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips (with belt sheath), pliers (needle-nose and channel locks), hammer, wrench set, cable stripper, flashlight, gloves; trade tools: punch tool with 110 block and 66 block blade; 6/8 position combo crimp tool.

Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements: High School diploma or GED required; minimum of two (2) years of experience in telecommunications or related technical field with supervisory ability; proficiency with listed tools; ability to interpret blueprints and other project documents; knowledge of universal communications color codes; and meeting company driving standards.
