Job summary

AIMS Locum Tenens is seeking qualified Gastroenterology Technicians to support GI services at MOMMC. This hands-on procedural role involves working with physicians and nurses during endoscopy and related GI procedures, preparing rooms, processing endoscopes, handling specimens, and supporting patient recovery and clinic scheduling.

The position requires a medical assistant background, BLS certification, and at least one year of recent medical experience; ACLS is recommended.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate and graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program (national, state, or military‑trained equivalent) with a current certificate.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience within the past 36 months in a medical setting.
  • BLS certification required; ACLS recommended.
  • No licensure required.
  • Knowledge of GI procedures, anatomy and physiology, aseptic technique, infection control, specimen handling, EMR documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, support, and take down equipment and supplies for routine and emergent GI procedures, including procedures performed in the GI suite, OR, ER, and ICU.
  • Assist physicians and RNs during diagnostic, therapeutic, and emergency procedures.
  • Prepare procedure rooms and preoperative bays; screen/check in patients and safely transport them.
  • Obtain, monitor, and document physiological measurements in the EMR.
  • Perform lab draws and transport specimens according to hospital protocols.
  • Perform high-level disinfection (HLD) of endoscopes, including washing, processing, storage, testing disinfectant efficacy, and using the endoscopic reprocessor according to manufacturer IFUs and TJC requirements.
  • Properly identify, label, handle, and deliver specimens to pathology.
  • Assist with post‑procedure patient recovery and identification of complications.
  • Maintain equipment, supplies, inventory, expiration dates, clean work areas, and infection‑control standards.
  • Schedule appointments/procedures, process referrals, answer phone calls/T-Cons, upload GI reports, and support electronic health records.
  • Train new staff and support GI procedure training for General Surgery and OR personnel.

Job Overview:

AIMS Locum Tenens is seeking qualified Gastroenterology Technicians to support the GI service at MOMMC. This is a hands‑on procedural support position working with physicians and nurses during gastrointestinal procedures such as upper endoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, ERCP, esophageal pH testing, pill camera endoscopy, paracentesis, manometry, liver biopsy, and PEG placement. The technician prepares rooms and equipment, assists during procedures and emergencies, processes endoscopes, handles specimens, supports patient recovery, performs patient intake, and assists with clinic scheduling and documentation.

Specific Duties:

Qualifications
Education:

High school graduate and graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program (national, state, or military‑trained equivalent) with a current certificate. The PWS does not permit education equivalency substitutions.

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of experience within the past 36 months in a medical setting. Prior GI experience is desired.

Certification:

Required BLS under the PWS; ACLS is recommended. Certifications must meet American Heart Association or American Red Cross guidelines; computer‑based training does not satisfy the requirement.

Licensure:

None required.

Knowledge/Skills:

GI procedures, anatomy and physiology, aseptic technique, infection control, specimen handling, medical equipment preparation/storage, endoscope processing, instrument handling, patient communication, EMR documentation, and ability to remain calm during emergencies.

Schedule:
  • Monday-Friday
  • Shifts scheduled between 0600-1800
  • Maximum 40 hours per week
  • Minimum 30-minute uncompensated lunch
  • Exact days/hours/shift duration determined by the Government representative
  • On‑call required for urgent/emergent GI procedures during nights, weekends, and holidays
  • On-call rotation: no more frequent than 1:3
Work Environment:

This is a fast-paced military GI clinic and procedural environment where the technician works closely with gastroenterologists, nurses, OR staff, and other healthcare professionals. The role involves significant hands‑on work with patients and endoscopy equipment, prolonged standing/walking, transporting patients and equipment, infection‑control procedures, and responding calmly to urgent or emergent GI cases.

Health & Other Requirements:

Must satisfy MTF occupational‑health requirements, including applicable TB screening, MMR, varicella, Tdap, annual influenza, and Hepatitis B requirements for direct patient‑care HCWs. COVID‑19 vaccination is recommended but not required under this PWS. Medical scrubs are required when working in operating/surgical settings and are provided by the MTF.
