Job description

Technical Writer

Location:

Mountain View, CA

About Rune:

Every solar and wind power plant is a latent data center. Rune connects wasted power to the compute that needs it. Solar plants generate electricity the grid can't take: clipped by inverters, curtailed by operators, gone before it ever reaches a meter. Meanwhile, AI needs more power than new construction can deliver in time.

Rune deploys hardware, software, and financial solutions to put this power to work. We build modular micro data centers that install directly at solar sites, bypassing the traditional grid entirely and turning stranded power into compute. We're backed by Spark Capital, Union Square Ventures, and Lowercarbon Capital.

The Role:

As Technical Writer at Rune, you will own the written layer of how we build, deploy, and operate RELICs (Rune’s modular data centers tied to renewables): from assembly work instructions on the Pilot Manufacturing Line floor to commissioning runbooks and customer deliverables at sites across the country. You are our first dedicated documentation hire, and will have the opportunity to build this practice from scratch as the company scales around it.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Produce and maintain engineering documentation across RELIC generations, including design specs, interface documents, test and commissioning procedures, and review packages, working directly with engineers to extract technical detail and validate accuracy before anything ships.
  • Develop, review, and maintain assembly work instructions for RELIC production, spending time on the shop floor so procedures reflect how the work is actually done.
  • Build deployment, commissioning, operations, and troubleshooting runbooks for field sites, and keep them synchronized as hardware and processes evolve across a growing multi-state footprint.
  • Produce visual documentation such as assembly diagrams, exploded views, wiring and interface illustrations.
  • Work across engineering, manufacturing and supply chain, field and deployment operations, and customer success to source accurate content and keep documentation aligned with how RELICs are actually built, deployed, and supported.
  • Support customer and contract deliverables tied to compute offtake agreements, including onboarding guides, SLA and escalation reference, and uptime and service reporting packages.
  • Partner with our EHS Lead to bake safety steps directly into work instructions and keep safety procedures, training materials, and compliance records accurate and current.
  • Turn core documentation into onboarding and training content so new technicians, field crews, and operators ramp quickly.
  • Select and develop Rune's documentation system: organization, versioning, access, and a review cadence that catches stale content before it reaches the floor or the field.
  • Establish lightweight documentation standards and templates that hold up as headcount, hardware generations, and site count grow.
Ideal Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of technical writing experience in hardware, energy, data center, manufacturing, or a similarly physical environment.
  • Proven ability to write work instructions and SOPs that production and field teams actually execute against.
  • Comfortable working directly with engineers to extract technical content, and asking questions when requirements are unclear rather than papering over gaps.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex systems into documentation that non-technical readers can act on.
  • Experience with documentation systems, style guides, and version control, with a strong instinct for consistency; standing up documentation systems a plus..
  • Experience using software to create and mark up visual documentation such as diagrams, exploded views, wiring and interface illustrations, redlines, basic CAD/drawing markup, screenshots and photos..
  • Comfortable reading BOMs, schematics, mechanical drawings & ECOs, and working within a PLM or version-control workflow to manage documentation across multiple concurrent product variants evolving in parallel.
  • Experienced with controlled documents, revision and change control, and as-built/redline practices; familiarity with relevant standards (OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC, UL) is a plus.
  • Self-directed and able to manage multiple documentation workstreams in a fast-moving environment where processes are still being written.
  • Able to travel ~10% of the time to deployment sites.
What We Offer:

Competitive compensation and career growth opportunities in what we believe will be one of the largest infrastructure build-outs of the decade.
