Job summary

Rune seeks a Controller in Mountain View to lead cost accounting, fixed assets, and strong financial controls as the company scales its modular data centers at solar sites.

You will partner with engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and operations to provide decision-grade reporting, drive automated processes, and ensure ASC 606 compliance and tax reporting with external advisors.

Qualifications

• Active CPA required.
• 5+ years Controller experience in hardware manufacturing, startup preferred.
• Familiar with R&D spend, product development costs, procurement and inventory.
• Experience with QuickBooks Online and lightweight ERP/MRP platforms; ERP migration a plus.

Responsibilities

• Own cost accounting & fixed assets including RELICs, leased equipment, site deployments and infrastructure.
• Partner with Procurement for accurate accounting of WIP, CapEx, overhead allocation, and production scaling.
• Own end-to-end inventory accounting from raw materials to finished units and deployed units.
• Manage revenue recognition under ASC 606, stock-based compensation accounting, and tax compliance with outside advisors.
• Develop and maintain reporting for engineering, supply chain, operations and leadership.

Job description

Every solar and wind power plant is a latent data center. Rune connects wasted power to the compute that needs it. Solar plants generate electricity the grid can't take: clipped by inverters, curtailed by operators, gone before it ever reaches a meter. Meanwhile, AI needs more power than new construction can deliver in time.

Rune deploys hardware, software, and financial solutions to put this power to work. We build modular micro data centers that install directly at solar sites, bypassing the traditional grid entirely and turning stranded power into compute. The Role:

Rune is seeking a Controller to join our team in Mountain View. This is a hands-on, critical role in Rune's accounting function, responsible for accurate production costing, financial reporting, strong controls, and operational discipline across a rapidly growing organization. Your work enables Rune to strategically scale manufacturing, operations, and global deployments. You will partner daily with engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and operations, and the reporting you build will be used across every one of those functions to make decisions.

Key Responsibilities:

Cost Accounting & Fixed Assets

• Own the cost record for the business: RELICs, leased equipment (lessor accounting), site deployments, and site infrastructure. You work hand in hand with Project Operations and Inventory teams to build a detailed, clean, and current view of assets.
• Partner with Procurement to ensure accurate accounting for WIP, CapEx, overhead allocation, and production scaling.
• Own inventory accounting end-to-end - raw materials through WIP to finished units and units deployed in the field - along with long-lead purchase commitments and deposits.
• Understand and maintain technical accounting for R&D, product development costs, prototyping, and non-recurring engineering costs, and set depreciation policy for units and site infrastructure.

Systems & Automation

• Improve ERP workflows and keep QuickBooks Online and the ERP reconciled and in sync.
• Evaluate and implement new systems as needed.
• Drive automation that eliminates manual reporting and supports multi-site operations.
• Strengthen controls and process as transaction volume and deployments grow.

Reporting

• Build and maintain reporting that will inform engineering, supply chain, operations, and leadership of key data for decision-making.
• Produce the actuals, reconciliations, and supporting schedules behind Board, investor, and lender reporting, partnering with the team to monitor KPIs and variance analysis.
• Handle revenue recognition under ASC 606, stock-based compensation accounting, and tax compliance and reporting in coordination with outside advisors.

Ideal Qualifications:

• Active CPA; Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred.
• 5+ years of Controller experience at a hardware manufacturing organization, preferably at a startup.
• You are familiar with the realities of building physical, manufactured technology: R&D spend, product development costs, procurement, and inventory.
• Nimble, hands-on fluency in QuickBooks Online and lightweight ERP/MRP platforms (Odoo or similar); ERP implementation or migration experience is a plus.
• The instincts of a builder: detail-obsessed, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to create clarity and process where none exists yet.
