Job summary

Rune in Mountain View, CA is seeking a Materials Planning Manager to own inventory accuracy across the company, from receiving dock to deployed sites. You will manage rolling demand forecasts, maintain MRP, and balance inventory with supplier lead times, ensuring alignment with finance and operations.

This role requires building dashboards, leading cross-functional reviews, and implementing cycle counts and location discipline across production and field sites.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years in demand planning, supply/materials planning, or inventory operations, including experience at an early-stage or high-growth hardware company.
  • A track record of building forecasting and planning models that hold up under real supply constraints — not just theoretical frameworks.
  • Direct experience diagnosing and resolving recurring supply shortages through root-cause and buffer/safety-stock analysis.
  • Experience managing inventory or planning across multiple physical sites simultaneously.
  • Comfort building dashboards or reporting tools from scratch to create shared visibility across supply chain, operations, and finance stakeholders.
  • Fluent in ERP/MRP systems and comfortable tying demand plans, purchase orders, and physical counts back to the financial record.
  • The instincts of a builder: detail-obsessed, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to create clarity and process where none existed before

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a rolling demand forecast, drawing on the sales pipeline, production schedule, and historical part consumption across multiple hardware programs.
  • Run and maintain MRP, converting the demand plan and BOMs into time-phased purchase and production orders.
  • Set and continuously tune safety stock targets and reorder points by part, weighing supplier lead-time risk, carrying cost, and component criticality — particularly for constrained items like GPUs and power electronics.
  • Own purchase order planning end-to-end: quantities, timing, and supplier commitments that stay aligned with MRP output and inventory policy.
  • Get ahead of recurring component shortages through root-cause analysis and buffer/safety-stock modeling, and turn one-off fixes into standing policy.
  • Build real-time visibility tools — dashboards spanning supplier, production, and inventory data — that give manufacturing, supply chain, and finance a shared, live view of supply and demand.
  • Lead recurring cross-functional planning reviews to reconcile demand, supply, and capacity, and to keep stakeholders aligned as the production ramp accelerates.
  • Own inventory accuracy as the single point of accountability across the company.
  • Design and run the cycle count program; investigate variances to root cause and fix the process, not just the number.
  • Establish and enforce bin and location discipline at every site.
  • Maintain serialized tracking of high-value components (GPUs, power electronics) from receipt through production, deployment, and return.
  • Manage inventory across Mountain View production and a growing footprint of deployed field sites.
  • Track spares, in-transit units, and field inventory at deployed sites.
  • Run the ERP as the system of record for inventory; ensure transactions post accurately and on time.
  • Partner with the Controller and FP&A team to tie physical counts back to the financial records, supporting month-end close, WIP and CapEx accuracy, and audit readiness.
  • Build reporting on on-hand, in-transit, and shrinkage that manufacturing, supply chain, and finance can act on.
  • Stand up inventory process from scratch: SOPs, training, and controls that hold up as volume and site count grow.

Job description

Materials Planning Manager
Location: Mountain View, CA
About Rune:

Every solar and wind power plant is a latent data center. Rune connects wasted power to the compute that needs it. Solar plants generate electricity the grid can't take: clipped by inverters, curtailed by operators, gone before it ever reaches a meter. Meanwhile, AI needs more power than new construction can deliver in time.

Rune deploys hardware, software, and financial solutions to put this power to work. We build modular micro data centers that install directly at solar sites, bypassing the traditional grid entirely and turning stranded power into compute. We're backed by Spark Capital, Union Square Ventures, and Lowercarbon Capital.

The Role:

Rune manufactures data centers the way the best hardware companies manufacture products: fast, repeatable, and built to scale. World-class manufacturing runs on inventory that the organization can trust.

Rune is seeking a Materials Planning Manager to own inventory accuracy across the company. This person will have a view on every server, power module, and part from receiving dock to deployed site. Our units are built in Mountain View and operate at renewable energy sites across the country, so inventory lives in several places at once: from the production floor to the field. The Materials Planning Manager will keep the physical world and digital record in agreement. You will work with manufacturing, supply chain, and field operations, and partner closely with the Controller and FP&A team to make sure what's on the shelf matches what's on the books.

Key Responsibilities:
Demand & Supply Planning

Inventory Management
  • Own inventory accuracy as the single point of accountability across the company.

  • Design and run the cycle count program; investigate variances to root cause and fix the process, not just the number.

  • Establish and enforce bin and location discipline at every site.

  • Maintain serialized tracking of high-value components (GPUs, power electronics) from receipt through production, deployment, and return.

  • Manage inventory across Mountain View production and a growing footprint of deployed field sites.

  • Track spares, in-transit units, and field inventory at deployed sites.

Systems & Financial Partnership
  • Run the ERP as the system of record for inventory; ensure transactions post accurately and on time.

  • Partner with the Controller and FP&A team to tie physical counts back to the financial records, supporting month-end close, WIP and CapEx accuracy, and audit readiness.

  • Build reporting on on-hand, in-transit, and shrinkage that manufacturing, supply chain, and finance can act on.

  • Stand up inventory process from scratch: SOPs, training, and controls that hold up as volume and site count grow.

Ideal Qualifications:

What We Offer:
  • Competitive base, meaningful equity, and strategic ownership in what we believe will be one of the largest infrastructure build-outs of the decade.
