Emory & Henry University on Emory Campus is seeking a Library Technician to support cataloging, processing, and circulation of library materials. You will collaborate on electronic resources, reserve loading, and government documents handling in a small private college setting.

The role requires an Associate’s degree (Bachelor’s preferred) with experience in Sierra and OCLC, strong attention to detail, confidentiality, and teamwork. This is a full-time staff position on campus.

Responsibilities

  • Performs cataloging and processing for all library materials, including periodicals and government documents.
  • Loads electronic resource records and assists with electronic resources workflows.
  • Maintains circulation services and supports course reserves.
  • Trains student employees performing processing activities.
  • Assists with inventory, labels, barcodes, and security strips on materials.
  • Collaborates with HAL consortium catalogers on OPAC cleanup projects.
  • Provides service at the circulation desk and responds to patron requests.

Position Purpose (Essential Functions)
  • Is responsible for performing regular cataloging and processing of library materials, including periodicals and government documents
  • Collaborates with Electronic Resources and Outreach Librarian in loading and maintaining electronic resource records, as needed
  • Is responsible for providing circulation services
Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Services:

Cataloging:

  • Performs all procedures required for cataloging and processing materials for all collections in the library, including circulating, special collections, and reference books, DVDs, and CDs.
  • Imports bibliographic records from an external database to the integrated library system. Researches records and makes updates as needed.
  • Prepares materials being added to the library by attaching labels and barcodes to all materials, adding special bookplates, laminating book covers, and placing security strips.
  • Assists with inventory of the library collections and correcting problems regarding labels, call numbers, holding information, etc.
  • Processes materials and records for materials that are being withdrawn from the collections.
  • Performs book repairs
  • Works with other HAL consortium catalogers in doing clean-up projects in the OPAC.

Electronic Resources:

  • Collaborates with Electronic Resources and Outreach Librarian in monthly loads of electronic resource records into the integrated library system (Sierra)
  • Trains student employees performing processing activities.
  • Assists with course reserve services, including loading items into eReserves classes
  • Government Documents:

    • Perform all procedures required for cataloging and adding materials for the government documents collection.
    • Process all withdrawn government documents.
    Circulation
    • Regularly staff the circulation desk
    • Checking-in and checking-out material, renewing overdue items, searching for and finding requested items
    • Respond to patron requests and issue community borrower cards
    • Answering and directing telephone queries
    • Handling small amounts of money collected for charges associated with copying, faxing, lamination, etc.
    • Assist in opening and/or closing the library
    • Perform shelving and stack maintenance

    Other duties as assigned

    Required Education & Experience

    Required Education:

    • Associate's degree (required)
    • Bachelor’s degree (preferred)

    Required Experience:

    • Library experience (preferred)
    Competency:
    • Knowledge of library cataloging standards and processing procedures.
    • Ability to learn and use specialized library software programs such as Sierra and OCLC.
    • Familiarity with modern offices practices and procedures, and proficiency in Microsoft Office or Google products.
    • Ability to multi-task, handle interruptions, and work positively and effectively within a team.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

    Physical Characteristics and Requirements

    The physical demands for this job include those typical in a modern office environment.

    Need to have the ability to push/pull work carts on wheels up to 90 pounds, lifting books of up to 20 pounds, and lifting boxes up to 50 pounds.
