This position provides general technical support to the School of Filmmaking curriculum and related student and faculty production activities by providing necessary equipment and facilitating the return of said equipment. While the bulk of the work supports faculty, students and staff for productions and classroom instruction, there are a variety of tasks that must be performed to support the department itself. Familiarity with the function and operation of grip and electric equipment is essential. The position requires heavy lifting of equipment from time to time; manual dexterity and the ability to concentrate for long periods of time are a must. Safety is a critical aspect of the work and the position requires that attention be paid to the proper storage, maintenance/repair and operation of equipment.
Two years work experience in film and television production.
Instruction & Support
- Provide technical instruction and support to students, faculty, and staff in the use of film production equipment, with a focus on grip and electric gear.
- Train and advise students on the proper operation, handling, and safety procedures for production equipment
- Coordinate and Instruct student workers in filling equipment requests and proper handling of gear safely.
- Assist students in troubleshooting technical issues during in-class session and on-location/student productions.
- Collaborate closely with the production department regarding use of trucks, generators, and other large-scale production assets.
- Maintain frequent communication with faculty and staff to align equipment and facility needs with curriculum goals and production schedules.
Equipment Management & Maintenance
- Assist the Technical Operations Manager in preparation, scheduling, and distribution of equipment packages for student productions, classes
- Assist in inventory and track all equipment. Oversee student workers in the check out and return process of G/E equipment; checking for damage or missing components and ensuring items are in proper working order.
- Perform hands-on work using repair tools, testing equipment, and detailed mechanical processes.
- Monitor the condition of equipment and spaces; proactively identify and address issues to minimize disruptions to instruction and production.
- Must be detailed oriented
Facilities and Stage Support
- Assist the Production Coordinator in maintaining the School of Filmmaking's sound stages and other facilities.
- Ensure stages and technical spaces are safe, clean, and ready for use.
- Support logistical setup and breakdown of gear for classes and productions on stages or throughout the school's facilities.
Grip & Electric Specialization
- Serve as the primary expert on grip and electric gear, including but not limited to stands, rigging, distribution, dimmers, HMIs, LEDs, dollies, flags, silks, and power systems.
- Ensure all grip/electric gear is stored properly, maintained to industry standards, and used safely in line with OSHA and institutional guidelines.
- Assist with the operation and coordination of grip/electric gear for classes, and film shoots.
Safety Oversight
- Maintain and enforce strict safety standards related to the use of film production technology and equipment.
- Instruct students on best safety practices regarding electricity, rigging, lifting, lighting instruments, generators, and vehicles.
- Monitor and promote safe working conditions across Technical Operations and School of Filmmaking facilities.
