Medical Technologist
Rockville, MD

State of Credentials Licenses Required: Not required, but preferred ASCP certification

Shift/Time Zone: Night shift, 10:45 pm - 7:15 am. 40-hour employee rotating weekends. EST.

Job Description:

Responsible for performing routine and non-routine activities pertaining to laboratory testing and the reporting of results. Performs moderately difficult to complex tasks. Performs assigned analytical testing procedures accurately, precisely, and in a timely manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and record maintenance of patient test results.
  2. Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested similarly to patient specimens.
  3. Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures (see department SOPs).
  4. Review and release test results.
  5. Follow CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety guidelines.
  6. Adhere to quality control policies, document all activities, calibrations, and maintenance.
  7. Follow policies when test systems are outside performance standards.
  8. Identify and correct problems affecting test performance or report to supervisor.
  9. Document corrective actions for deviations from performance specifications.
  10. Report STAT or Critical results to clients as per procedures.
  11. Respond to questions from customers or lab personnel if applicable.
  12. Maintain complete records of all testing performed on-site.
  13. Maintain the department's appearance.
  14. Ensure reagents/test kits are properly labeled with received, expiration, and opened dates.
  15. Review and train on new procedures.
  16. Attend monthly department and additional training sessions.
  17. Participate in safety training and be familiar with safety equipment and manuals.
  18. Assist in government or regulatory inspections as needed.
  19. Perform other duties as directed by supervisor.

Qualifications:

Education: BS in Medical Technology, or BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology, or qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433 (published March 14, 1990).

Work Experience:

Minimum of 1 year clinical experience in high complexity testing preferred. For those with BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology, at least 1 year of clinical laboratory experience in highly complex testing is required.

Other Skills: Ability to establish work priorities, handle multiple procedures, interact with other departments, and provide good customer service. Must protect patient confidentiality at all times.

Additional Job Details: This is an overnight shift, 40 hours/week with rotating weekends.
