Amazon Robotics is seeking a uniquely talented, highly motivated and strong technical infrastructure program manager to drive multiple initiatives that support our continued and rapid growth and retrofitting in North America. You will form part of a small, but high-profile team of Technical Integration specialists that collaborate alongside our construction, hardware engineering and deployment engineering partners to deliver complex robotics facilities. The Technical Integration team’s primary goal is to ensure that critical technical and environmental requirements are correctly interpreted and incorporated into all new robotics buildings and that the delivered environment is both compliant to specification and fit for purpose. The Technical Integration Program Manager – Amazon Robotics, position is to be based in the Boston, Massachusetts area.

The ideal candidate will have a strong construction management or fulfilment centre engineering background with experience of warehouse automation, robotics picking/transportation systems or highly automated plant & machinery. The candidate will need to be an experienced leader/manager with strong analytical capabilities and a track record of managing complex engineering projects or programs. The candidate should ideally possess technical consulting experience with proven program or project management skills, as well as excellent listening, communication and facilitation skills. First hand experience with high-tolerance facility design and construction, would be advantageous.

This position involves regular communication with senior management on progress, risk management and problem resolution. The position requires an ability to lead cross functional and multi-disciplinary teams. We expect that our technical managers have the ability to operate independently.

This job will require a unique combination of energy, flexibility, tenacity, leadership skills, and proactive management. It also requires travel, up to 40-50% of overall time, to locations across North America.

Key job responsibilities
  1. AR technical consultant: serve as primary AR POC for NA Design & Construction teams & their design/consulting partners to address construction related robotics technical queries and to educate new partners with respect to critical AR operating and environmental requirements during both pre-construction and construction phases. Also, to own/manage customer requests for AR Hardware specification deviations to comply with local legal/legislative requirements and/or local industry standards/practices.
  2. AR technical compliance: collaborate with NA Design & Construction teams & consulting partners to validate and report on compliance with regards to technical and environmental operating requirements (i.e., floor flatness, levelness, floor joints, floor surface characteristics, floor live loading/deflections, floor penetrations, ambient lighting levels, etc). Primary objective is to identify potential issues as close to point of construction as possible and initiate corrective measures to minimize impact to deployment/launch phase.
  3. Problem solving/issue resolution: manage and coordinate cross-functional teams to resolve specification shortfalls/deviations, non-compliant finishes and system level change requests. Manage escalations to NA D&C and AR leadership teams, as required.
  4. Specification development: take a lead role driving further development of AR building technical and environmental specifications. Support and manage as required, local field trials and experiments, materials development and finishing/re-finishing trials.
  5. Post completion support: (Keeping the Lights On): supporting Operations and Reliability Maintenance Engineering (RME) teams as SME for robotic related building performance issues, leading technical reviews/investigations.
  6. Defect monitoring and reporting: coordinate and manage condition monitoring of problem/defective floors and environmental issues where AR system performance is being affected.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Bachelor’s degree in an engineering, construction or surveying related field
  • 6+ years’ experience managing engineering or construction projects related to either fulfillment center, distribution/logistics or industrial buildings.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills gained in an engineering or highly technical environment.
  • 3 – 5 years’ experience managing highly technical projects, involving either warehouse or factory automation or some other large scale technical implementation.
  • Ability to lead and manage cross-functional, multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams.
  • Ability to read drawings in AutoCAD.
  • Willingness to travel 40-50% of the year
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • MBA or MS in Engineering, Management or a related technical field supplemented with program management skills
  • Proven ability to manage multiple workstreams and prioritize critical tasks with a high attention to detail
