Job summary

The City of Houston Transportation & Drainage Operations is seeking a skilled hardware/controls technician to design, install, and maintain data communication networks and process control equipment at the 6922 Katy Rd facility. This role involves working with vendors, diagnosing network failures, and maintaining ITS assets such as CCTV and Bluetooth systems.

Requirements include an Associate’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent certification, plus two years of related experience.

Qualifications

  • Requires an Associate’s degree in computer science, instrumentation or electronics, or equivalent certification program.
  • Two years of experience in design, installation, operation and/or maintenance of a computerized data communications network or industrial control system.
  • Substitution: relevant experience may substitute education on a year-for-year basis.
  • May require a valid Texas driver's license depending on area of specialty.
  • Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants per Executive Order 1-6.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, evaluates and implements data communication networks or microprocessor-based process control equipment.
  • Assists in identification and selection of new equipment through collaboration with vendors, users and management.
  • Diagnoses data communications system failures; interfaces with vendors to resolve problems with various data communications facilities.
  • Evaluates network design to make recommendations for improvement of performance; provides training for installation and operation of network equipment.
  • Maintains statistical reports on project status and inventory.
  • Maintain ITS equipment such as Bluetooth, RS900 Rugged Comm, Battery Backup, DMS, CCTV, MBC.
  • Operates test equipment to isolate software/hardware circuits or cable related problems.
  • Repairs and calibrates all components of process control systems or data communication networks; troubleshoots and repairs both digital and analog electronic equipment to the component level.
  • May lead other technical hardware analysts in keep up with industry changes and applications with software upgrades and applications changes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs moderately complex, skilled technical work in the design, installation, operation, maintenance and repair of computer hardware and data communications equipment or industrial control systems.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Designs, evaluates and implements data communication networks or microprocessor-based process control equipment.

  • Assists in identification and selection of new equipment through collaboration with vendors, users and management.

  • Diagnoses data communications system failures; interfaces with vendors to resolve problems with various types of data communications facilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing etc.


This is a Department of Houston Public Works position at the Tier I Level.


EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires an Associate’s degree (two-year program) in a computer science, instrumentation or electronics discipline or the equivalent, such as certification in a technical/specialty program of up to three years in duration


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Two (2) years of experience in the design, installation, operation, and/or maintenance of a computerized data communications network or industrial control system are required.


Substitution: Relevant experience (as described above) may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.


LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Depending upon area of specialty -- may require a valid class \"C\" Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. In the Public Works and Engineering Department, may require a valid class \"C\" or higher Texas Water or Wastewater Plant Operator's license.


Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

However, the department may administer a skills assessment test.
