About Playable Worlds

Playable Worlds is a team of talented and creative game industry professionals working together on a sandbox MMO built for the cloud. Led by Raph Koster (Ultima Online; Star Wars Galaxies), Playable Worlds offers a collaborative and diverse work environment, competitive pay and benefits, and opportunities to create innovative gameplay experiences in online worlds that feel real and engaging.

All positions at Playable Worlds are currently remote. The salary range for this position is $70,000-$90,000 annually, plus stock options.

Summary

This Technical Designer position is responsible for:

  1. Designing the technical implementation of gameplay systems, executing that implementation, and documenting it.
  2. Iterating on new and existing systems based on team and player feedback.
  3. Coordinating with Engineering to ensure design scripting integrates efficiently with other game systems and maintains MMO-level scalability.
  4. Collaborating with Art and Audio teams to determine visual and auditory requirements of gameplay features and systems.

The ideal candidate will have experience with these responsibilities on multiple game projects, preferably with MMO complexity and similar systems.

Knowledge/Skill/Ability Requirements
  1. At least 7+ years of industry experience, with 2 or more shipped projects involving MMO-like systems where they contributed significantly.
  2. Bachelor’s degree or higher; degrees in computer science or gaming are advantageous.
  3. Extensive experience with 1-2 scripting languages; knowledge of TypeScript is required.
  4. Familiarity with Unity.
  5. Ability to quickly learn new, internally developed systems specific to this project.
  6. Strong task prioritization skills for timely completion.
Bonus Points
  1. Reading source code for main game; familiarity with C# is a major plus.
  2. Passion for video games.
  3. Significant experience with competitive and cooperative multiplayer online games.
