Job summary

VARITE is seeking a Technical Associate - Research & Development for an on-site role in Wilmington, DE.

The candidate will support the second-shift operation of a focused-ion beam scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) under experienced scientists, with daytime training for the first three months.

The contract is 12 months with possible extension; compensation ranges from $28.00 to $31.69 per hour on W2, and US citizenship or a Green Card is required.

Qualifications

• BS in chemistry, materials science, physics, engineering or related field.
• Experience with electron microscopy.
• Ability to work in a team under tight timelines and priorities.

Responsibilities

• Prepare samples for analysis using polishers, plasma or sputter coaters, and FIB-SEM cross-section milling.

• Review and organize data for reporting to customers.
• Maintain instruments and dispose of laboratory waste per procedures.
• Coordinate with first-shift operator and adhere to safety protocols.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL DO

Shift Details:

• Work hours/days: 40 hours/week


• M-F :4:00 pm - 12:30 am (some flexibility may be available in daily start/finish times).


• Candidate will be trained during daytime hours (8:30 am - 5 pm) for the first three months.


• In-person on-site position (no work from home).

Schedule Details:

• Intended second shift but start time and end time is flexible. Can start as early as 3:30pm (end at midnight) or start as late as 11:00pm (end at 7:30 am).

Job Description:

• The candidate will assume responsibility for the second-shift operation of a focused-ion beam scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) in support of the **** Leveraged Analytical Sciences group.


• This in-person position is located at the Experimental Station in Wilmington, DE.


• The candidate will work under the direction of experienced scientists to provide analytical support for Research and Development (R&D), Technical Service and Development (TS&D), and Manufacturing.

Responsibilities:

• Prepare samples for analysis, following established procedures using equipment such as mechanical polishers, plasma or sputter coaters, and FIB-SEM cross-section milling and lift-out procedures.


• Perform FIB-SEM analyses including imaging, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and assess basic data quality.


• Review and organize collected data for reporting to customers.


• Perform routine instrument maintenance, following established procedures.


• Dispose of laboratory waste according to established protocols.


• Work second-shift hours and coordinate work with first-shift FIB-SEM operator.


• Adhere to all safety protocols.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in chemistry, materials science, physics, engineering, or a related field or equivalent knowledge acquired through on-the-job training.
