Job summary

Transdev North America in Houston, TX seeks a skilled Technician in Charge to supervise maintenance staff servicing METRO buses and ensure safe, reliable fleet operation.

You will lead daily shop activities, coordinate repairs, and enforce DOT/OSHA and company standards while driving maintenance efficiency and cost control.

Qualifications

  • Advanced mechanical aptitude with 3+ years of automotive or diesel repair experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of supervisory experience in a lead technician, supervisor, or management role.
  • Thorough knowledge of safe work practices, DOT, OSHA, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Experience planning and scheduling preventive maintenance and repair activities (daily, weekly, and monthly).
  • Valid driver’s license for 3 years required.

Technician in Charge

Transdev in Houston, TX is seeking a highly skilled Technician in Charge (TIC) to oversee the daily maintenance operations of the METRO bus fleet. This position is responsible for supervising technicians who maintain, diagnose, repair, and service transit buses to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient public transportation service. The Technician in Charge provides technical leadership, coordinates daily shop activities, and ensures compliance with all safety, regulatory, and company standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and lead technicians in the maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance of METRO buses.
  • Assign and prioritize daily work, monitor repair progress, and ensure high-quality workmanship.
  • Provide technical expertise and troubleshooting for complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, HVAC, engine, transmission, and brake system repairs.
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, FTA, OSHA, manufacturer, and company safety and maintenance standards.
  • Conduct quality control inspections, vehicle audits, and road tests to verify repairs and fleet readiness.
  • Coach, train, evaluate, and mentor technicians while supporting employee development and performance management.
  • Manage maintenance schedules, shop inventory, repair orders, and maintenance costs to maximize fleet availability.
  • Coordinate with operations and management to ensure vehicles are available for safe, reliable service.
  • Analyze equipment failures and maintenance trends to improve fleet reliability and reduce downtime.
  • Identify training opportunities, coach technicians, and implement corrective actions to improve performance.
  • Monitor shop productivity and operational efficiency, adjusting priorities to meet maintenance and service goals.
  • Supervise vehicle fueling operations and coordinate facility or grounds maintenance services as needed.
  • Assist technicians with repairs and hands-on maintenance when required.
  • Order fuel, parts, and outside repair services while maintaining inventory and controlling costs.
  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned to support fleet operations.
Qualifications

  • Ability to build positive labor relations with unionized employees (when applicable) and effectively address and resolve workplace concerns.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to coach, train, and support technicians in a fast-paced maintenance environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in a maintenance shop environment with exposure to dust, dirt, grease, noise, and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and varying outdoor environments as required.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in confined positions for extended periods.
  • Ability to work underneath vehicles while lying on a mechanic's creeper and perform repairs safely.
  • Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks associated with vehicle inspection, maintenance, and repair activities.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment in a fleet maintenance environment.
