The Complex Sentencing Modernization Project Team Lead will manage all aspects of complex sentencing audits and multi-jurisdictional expertise and guide local records teams, the Detainer Unit, and the Sentence Administration Unit, on direction and guidance continuous systems improvement and modernization of IT. This will include ensuring the adherence to statues, case law, court policies, and DOC policy/procedures. This position will provide recommendations on workplans and process for implementing modernized technology and will serve as a key subject matter expert and collaborator on the Sentencing and Records Strategy Team Leadership team alongside the Virtual Court Project Team Lead, Sentencing Supervisor, Detainer Unit Supervisor, Virtual Courts Supervisor, and Records Operations Manager. Given nexus to sentencing information, serve as backup to director on Records Retention consultations in accordance with Minnesota Statutes. The position will provide backup support to the Sentencing and Records director on leading and overseeing the regular meetings and workplans for sentencing matters.

  • This position is eligible for telework to applicants who reside in Minnesota or a bordering county along the Minnesota state line. Effective June 1, employees living within 50 miles of the office location listed above will be required to work in the office at least 50% of the time each month. For those who live 50 or more miles away, with supervisory approval and satisfactory performance are eligible to telework up to 100% of the time.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of project management experience which includes project coordination, designing, planning, program evaluation, and implementation. A Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, Public Administration or other related field may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
  • Demonstrated ability establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff at all organizational levels sufficient to provide information, coordinate services, plan and implement projects, formulate goals, and manage change.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
  • Communication skills sufficient to deliver quality communications to diverse audiences, verbally, and in writing, to convey complex technical and policy information in simple and understandable ways.
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and Access and custom applications.
  • Ability to work well both independently, and within a team setting, set priorities, multi-task, and meet deadlines with limited direction.
  • Strong experience in utilizing and coordinating use of virtual technology platforms.
  • Strong experience in coordinating training and events.
  • Excellent writing skills sufficient to complete a wide range of writing tasks including drafting of departmental policies and directives, management reports, and correspondence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Broad knowledge of the fundamentals of the criminal justice system and sentencing policy.
  • Extensive knowledge of authority applicable to criminal sentencing and multi-jurisdictional sentencing (MN State Statutes, Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines, case law, etc.)
  • Ability to adapt to continuous organizational and program changes sufficient to work effectively under pressure.
  • Experience as lead worker with office administrative support staff.

Additional Requirements

The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.

Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.

New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
