Job summary

Iliad is a nonprofit advancing foundational AI alignment research. The Teaching Lead will oversee delivery and quality across the Iliad Intensive, a course with 40+ students and ~15 rotating teachers per iteration, alternating monthly between London and Berkeley/SF.

You will design and teach modules, supervise staff, onboard new teachers, and coordinate with scheduling, curriculum, and operations to ensure a unified program.

Qualifications

• University degree in mathematics, physics, or theoretical computer science required.
• PhD is a plus but not required.
• Demonstrated teaching experience and care for participant learning.
• Excellent coordination with staff and students to meet goals.

Salary: $80,000 - $130,000 depending on experience and location

About Iliad

Iliad is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing foundational AI alignment research. We run the Iliad Intensive, the Iliad Fellowship, and a range of conferences that bring together researchers working on the hardest problems in AI safety. We also incubate research organizations and an academic journal, and have an internal research team. We're a small and quickly growing team.

About The Role

As the teaching lead, you will be responsible for the teaching delivery and quality across the entire Iliad Intensive, a course delivered to more than 40 promising students per iteration with around 15 rotating teachers per iteration. The intensive alternates monthly between London and Berkeley/SF, and is projected to have concurrent monthly London+Berkeley/SF cohorts from January 2027 onward. Your responsibilities will include:

• Teach various modules of the intensive based on prewritten materials
• Oversee the teaching of other teaching staff to enact improvements
• Uphold teaching standards across a rotating group of part-time teachers
• Work out a scalable strategy for teacher onboarding, ensuring new teachers are quickly trained to reach our standards
• Work closely with our scheduling staff, curriculum developers, and operations team members to ensure a unified operation of the course
• Create course materials and flag necessary improvements to other content creators

As Iliad is quickly growing, your role may adapt to changing needs of our program and Iliad as a whole.

What We’re Looking For

At a minimum, we are looking for someone with:

• Strong mathematical maturity; for example, a university degree in a theoretical subject like mathematics, physics, or theoretical computer science. A PhD is a plus but not required.
• Knowledge of the AI alignment field at roughly the level of the Iliad Intensive
• Demonstrated teaching experience and deep care for the effective learning of our participants
• An organized mind and ability to effectively coordinate with other staff and students to reach our goals

Our ideal candidate also comes with the following knowledge and skills:

• Experience mentoring, coaching, or supervising other teachers
• Familiarity with evidence-based pedagogy (active learning, retrieval practice, etc.)
