Job summary

Archdiocese of St. Louis seeks a Preschool Substitute Teacher to provide a safe, nurturing learning environment for ages 3–5 in the absence of the regular teacher.

You will follow established lesson plans, support social-emotional development, and deliver age-appropriate activities. The role emphasizes creating an inclusive classroom, maintaining routines, and adapting instruction to individual needs while ensuring safety and positive behavior.

Qualifications

• Coursework, certification, or a degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field preferred.
• Previous experience with preschool-aged children in a childcare setting preferred.
• Substitute teaching permit or other required authorization may be required by state regulations.
• CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
• Knowledge of child development principles and age-appropriate learning strategies.
• Patience, warmth, flexibility, and genuine interest in working with young children.

Responsibilities

• Follow lesson plans, schedules, and daily classroom routines provided by the regular preschool teacher or staff.
• Provide age-appropriate, play-based learning experiences that support early literacy, numeracy, motor development, social skills, and overall development.
• Facilitate engaging activities such as storytelling, singing, art, hands-on learning, guided play, and creative exploration.
• Adapt activities and instructional approaches to meet the individual developmental needs, interests, and learning styles of children.
• Create and maintain a warm, respectful, inclusive, and structured classroom environment.
• Establish and reinforce classroom routines, including transitions, clean-up, meals/snacks, rest or quiet time, and other daily activities.
• Use positive behavior guidance and classroom management strategies to encourage appropriate behavior and gently redirect children when needed.
• Foster curiosity, independence, cooperation, communication, and confidence through interactive learning and play.
• Encourage positive participation and social interaction among children.
• Provide emotional support, encouragement, reassurance, and individual attention to children as needed.
• Monitor children to promote their safety, health, and overall well-being at all times.
• Maintain appropriate classroom cleanliness and organization.
• Communicate relevant observations, concerns, or incidents to appropriate school or preschool staff.
• Follow all school policies, procedures, health and safety requirements, and applicable regulations.

Job Summary

The Preschool Substitute Teacher provides a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment for children ages 3–5 in the absence of the regular preschool teacher. • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to follow established routines and lesson plans while adapting to the changing needs of a preschool classroom.

• Ability to work cooperatively with teachers, staff, families, and school administration.
