Job summary

Montgomery Public Schools seeks an ESL Teacher to coordinate assessment, placement and instruction for ESL students within a designated service area. Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its goals.
  • Conducts in-service training for staff regarding ELL strategies.
  • Schedules ESL team meetings for student placement decisions.
  • Monitors academic progress of ELL students and suggests modifications.
  • Provides ESL instruction to K-12 English Language Learners.

  • Models innovative use of technology for students and staff.
  • Works with ESL Instructional Aides on teaching strategies and materials.
  • Maintains mileage records and submits monthly reports.
  • Submits information to the Special Services Office regarding ELLs.

  • Maintains up-to-date student folders with assessments and documentation.

  • Assists with evaluating ESL staff as needed.

Job Title - ESL Teacher
Supervised by/Reports to:

Special Services/ESL Program Supervisor

Supervises:

ESL Instructional Aides, translators, ESL Home-School Liaison, ESL Translator

Job Goals:

To coordinate the assessment, placement and instruction of ESL students in a designated service area.

To serve as a resource support to the staff and faculty at each of the schools in the assigned area through large group in-service and individual consultations.

To train ESL Instructional Aides in ESL teaching strategies and in the use of specialized materials.

To work collaboratively with the ESL Program Supervisor to develop program guidelines and to compile program data.

Qualifications:
  • 1. Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • 2. Valid Alabama teaching certificate in English as a Second Language (ESL) or appropriate area.
  • 3. Previous successful teaching experience preferred.
  • 4. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • 5. Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • 6. Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • 7. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
  • 8. Ability to develop and implement curriculum and programming specific to the needs of ESL students.
  • 9. Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • 10. Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  • 11. Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  • 1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  • 2. Conducts in-service training for classroom teachers, administrators, and support personnel regarding English Language Learners (ELLs) and strategies and procedures for serving language minority students.
  • 3. Schedules meetings of the English as a Second Language (ESL) team to review pertinent information and make recommendations concerning the placement of each student in the ESL Program.
  • 4. Monitors the academic progress of all ELL students in the regular program and makes recommendations to the regular classroom teachers concerning instructional modifications for ELL students.
  • 5. Provides ESL instruction to K-12 English Language Learners.
  • 6. Utilizes technology to plan and provide instruction and facilitate student learning.
  • 7. Models appropriate and innovate use of technology for students and staff.
  • 8. Works with ESL Instructional Aides in ESL teaching strategies and in the use of materials.
  • 9. Keeps record of daily mileage traveled and submits mileage report to base school at the first of each month.
  • 10. Submits information and updates to the Special Services Office regarding all ELLs enrolled in the designated service area.
  • 11. Attends professional development training each year regarding ELL programs and procedures.
  • 12. Keeps accurate and up-to-date student folders of all ELLs in the service area; including all assessment data, team meeting documentation, progress reports and pertinent correspondence.
  • 13. Administers placement tests and spring ACCESS assessments to ELLs in the designated service area.
  • 14. Assists as needed with the evaluation of ESL Instructional Aides or other designated personnel in accordance with school system policies and procedures.
  • 15. Demonstrates proficiency in written and oral communication.
  • 16. Collects, receipts and submits school funds in accordance with school procedures and Board policy.
  • 17. Engages in personal professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.
  • 18. Serves on committees, representative bodies, task forces, or as a system delegate as needed.
  • 19. Attends local, state, and national staff development programs, workshops, and conferences to improve professional performance and knowledge.
  • 20. Participates in administration of state and/or standardized testing as assigned; establishes appropriate testing environment and ensures test security.
  • 21. Performs duties in a courteous and professional manner.
  • 22. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • 23. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  • 24. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  • 25. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
  • 26. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • 27. Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors others in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory.
  • 28. Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
  • 29. Serves on school system committees, tasks forces, and representative groups as required.
  • 30. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
  • 31. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  • 32. Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by the principal and/or supervisor.
Terms of Employment

Nine-month position in accordance with the Board’s salary schedule.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Baldwin County Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
