Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Recognized Equivalent is required.
  • Two years of post-secondary education (48 semester hours) or an Associate’s Degree or equivalent WorkKeys score.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish strongly preferred.

  • Administers, scores, and records achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended by the ESL teacher.
  • Works with individuals or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by ESL or regular teachers.
  • Assists the teacher in devising strategies to reinforce material based on individual students’ needs, interests and abilities.
  • Operates and cares for classroom equipment used for instructional purposes.
  • Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
  • Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other instructional materials.
  • Guides independent study, enrichment, and remedial work as assigned.
  • Collaborates with ESL and regular teachers to support EL students.

INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT (ESL)

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 1. High School Diploma or Recognized Equivalent
  • 2. One of the following:
    • a. Two years’ post‑secondary education (48 semester hours)
    • b. Associate’s Degree on official transcript from accredited institution of higher education
    • c. WorkKeys Assessment:minimum score of Level 3 on Applied Math, Workplace Documents, and Business Writing
  • 3. Bilingual (English and Spanish) strongly preferred
REPORTS TO:

Teacher and School Administrator

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • 1. Administers, scores, and records such achievement and diagnostic tests as the ESL teacher recommends for individual students.
  • 2. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the ESL or regular teacher.
  • 3. Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  • 4. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  • 5. Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
  • 6. Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
  • 7. Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the ESL or regular classroom teacher.
  • 8. Collaborates with the ESL teacher and regular classroom teachers to carry out interventions, accommodations, and learning supports for EL students.
  • 9. Assists with translation and interpretation needs if bilingual.
  • 10. May assist with screening incoming students for English language proficiency.
  • 11. Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  • 12. May assist with keeping bulletin boards and other ESL classroom learning displays up-to-date.
  • 13. Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make-up work, as assigned by the teacher.
  • 14. Assists teacher in disciplinary record keeping.
  • 15. Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  • 16. Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the ESL or regular teacher, with regard to EL students.
  • 17. Provides in‑classroom support to EL students as directed by the ESL teacher.
  • 18. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
  • 19. Dresses and conducts oneself in a professional manner.
  • 20. Participates in in-service training programs, as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Nine (9)months unless otherwise determined by the board.Salary and work year to be established by the board.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel and as directed by the Alabama State Department of Education personnel evaluation requirements.
