Job Title: English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher
Reports To: Principal and Director of Exceptional Education
FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

The English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to multilingual learners to help them develop English language proficiency while achieving academic success in all content areas. The ELL Teacher collaborates with classroom teachers, administrators, families, and support staff to ensure English learners receive equitable access to high-quality instruction aligned with Alabama Course of Study standards and federal and state requirements.

The ELL Teacher serves as an advocate for multilingual learners by promoting culturally responsive teaching practices and ensuring compliance with all English Learner (EL) program requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction

• Provide high-quality, research-based English language development instruction to identified English Learners.

• Deliver instruction through push-in, pull-out, small group, or co-teaching models as appropriate.

• Differentiate instruction based on students' English proficiency levels and academic needs.

• Develop lesson plans aligned to Alabama English Language Proficiency Standards and grade-level academic standards.

• Incorporate instructional strategies that support listening, speaking, reading, and writing development.

• Monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on formative and summative assessment data.

Student Assessment

• Administer and coordinate state-required English language proficiency assessments (ACCESS for ELLs and Alternate ACCESS, as applicable).

• Assist with English Learner identification and placement procedures.

• Maintain accurate records of language proficiency, progress monitoring, and student services.

• Analyze assessment data to inform instructional decisions and intervention planning.

• Support the monitoring and exit process for former English Learners.

Collaboration

• Collaborate with classroom teachers to implement effective accommodations and instructional supports.

• Participate in MTSS, intervention meetings, and data discussions.

• Provide coaching and professional learning to teachers regarding best practices for supporting multilingual learners.

• Work closely with special education staff to support dully identified students.

Family and Community Engagement

• Build positive relationships with multilingual families.

• Assist families in understanding school expectations, educational opportunities, and student progress.

• Coordinate translation and interpretation services when appropriate.

• Encourage family engagement in school activities and events.

Compliance

• Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local EL program requirements, including Title III.

• Maintain accurate student documentation, language service plans, and required records.

• Participate in monitoring visits and program audits.

• Complete all required reports and documentation by established deadlines.

Professional Responsibilities

• Participate in faculty meetings, professional learning communities, and required professional development.

• Maintain confidentiality of student records.

• Demonstrate professionalism and uphold district policies and ethical standards.

• Perform other duties as assigned by school leadership.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

• Valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate.

• Appropriate certification in English as a Second Language (ESL) or eligibility to obtain ESL certification.

• Knowledge of second language acquisition and English language development.

• Knowledge of culturally responsive instructional practices.

Preferred

• Master's degree in TESOL, ESL, Bilingual Education, Education, or a related field.

• Experience teaching English Learners in an elementary or middle school setting.

• Experience administering ACCESS for ELLs assessments.

• Knowledge of WIDA English Language Development Standards.

• Bilingual or multilingual proficiency.
