Department Summary

The San José State University Teacher Education Department (TED) seeks part‑time instructors to reimagine PK‑12 teacher education by centering the diversity of the student population. The role focuses on creating anti‑racist, culturally sustaining, and emancipatory education structures that reflect the students the institution serves.

Brief Description of Duties

Part‑time instructors will teach foundations and/or subject‑area methods courses for candidates in the Multiple and/or Single Subject Credential Programs. Foundations courses include assessment, educational psychology, health and special education, multilingual learners, and sociology of education. Subject‑area methods courses focus on K‑12 curriculum and instruction in the instructor’s area of expertise (e.g., art, English language arts, mathematics, music, physical education, science, social science, or world languages).

  • Demonstrate awareness of and experience with the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
  • Organize and manage all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) to ensure faculty–student connection in a common space.
  • Ensure all classes are offered and meet as scheduled throughout the semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule (asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in‑person, or hybrid).
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree and significant expertise and experience teaching in K‑12 public school settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the subject matter and the associated California Frameworks and Content Standards for K‑12 education.
  • Ability to mentor and evaluate adult learners, with evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population, demonstrated through cross‑cultural study, training, teaching, or comparable experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Experience and knowledge of classroom structures and pedagogical strategies supporting multilingual learners and students with disabilities in general education classrooms.
Compensation

Salary ranges are determined by qualifications and experience. For detailed placement information, refer to University Policy S21‑2.

Anticipated Starting Salary
  • L‑A / Range 2 – $5,507 – $5,959
  • L‑B / Range 3 – $6,221 – $7,481
  • L‑C / Range 4 – $6,825 – $9,431
  • L‑D / Range 5 – $8,593 – $10,347

Monthly rates listed above are for full‑time faculty; part‑time rates are prorated. There are six monthly payments per semester (full‑time annual salary = rate x 12). See the Faculty Salary Schedule for more information.
