Ann Arbor Public Schools is seeking a Teacher Assistant for Preschool (Head Start and ECSE) at the Westerman Preschool & Family Center. The role is a 1.0 FTE support position reporting to the Classroom Teacher and Building Principal.

Responsibilities include assisting in instructional activities, supporting individual and group learning, maintaining student records, and facilitating home visits to extend the program into families' homes.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree with a CDA OR Bachelor's in Early Childhood or Child Development
  • Experience working with young children under five years old
  • Experience with children and families of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Experience in the Head Start Program
  • Experience working with children with special needs
  • Valid Michigan driver's license and access to reliable transportation
  • High school diploma or equivalent with 60 credits or CDA plus 30 hours or MTTC/ParaPro passing score
  • Experience working with special education students
  • Ability to perform academically at the level of K-8 or secondary
  • ABA training desired

Responsibilities

  • Assist in all instructional activities.
  • Work with individual children and groups on instructional activities.
  • Maintain student records.
  • Plan and complete home visits to families in Head Start to extend instruction.
  • Develop and reproduce instructional materials for Head Start.
  • Assist with self-care needs, including toilet tasks when required.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Associate's Degree with a CDA OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood or Child Development
  • Experience working with young children (under five years of age).
  • Experience working with children and families of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.
  • Experience in the Head Start Program
  • Experience working with children with special needs.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license and access to reliable transportation.

High school diploma or equivalent and at least one of the following:

  • Associates or Bachelor's degree.
  • 60 credit hours from approved post secondary institution, or CDA certificate with the ability to complete additional 30 hours.
  • Have passing score on one of the following state approved academic assessments:
    • i. Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC)
    • ii. ETS ParaPro Assessment
  • Experience working with special education students
  • Must be able to perform academic work at the level of assignment (K-8 or secondary)
  • CPI training or willingness to be trained
  • ABA training desired
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist in ALL instructional activities.
  • Work with individual children and groups of children on instructional activities.
  • Maintain student records.
  • Plan and complete home visits to families with children enrolled in Head Start to extend the instructional program into home activities.
  • Develop, prepare and reproduce instructional material to be used in the Head Start program.
  • Assistance in self-care needs, which may include toileting and occasional diapering.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Communicate effectively and present information both in oral and in written form
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
  • Add, subtract, and multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
  • Work with parents and children of diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community
  • Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies
