Job summary

Great Lakes Community Action Partnership (GLCAP) seeks a Teacher Assistant (Union) to support preschool children in a Head Start setting. Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM, 34 hours per week August through June, with benefits and a supportive team.

You will assist with implementing lesson plans, maintain a safe learning environment, and help meet Head Start standards. Prior early childhood experience is preferred; a high school diploma or GED is required, and CDA options may apply.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • CDA credential or enrollment in CDA program within two years of hire is preferred.
  • Enrollment in a program leading to an associate or bachelor’s degree is acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with implementing developmentally appropriate activities and strategies supporting preschool children's development.
  • Contribute to an age-appropriate learning environment accommodating individual differences.
  • Promote a positive learning environment and supportive teacher-child interactions.
  • Substitute for teaching staff and assist with classroom activities.
  • Organize, sanitize and store classroom equipment and supplies.
  • Assist in conducting 2 educational home visits per child per year.
  • Maintain accurate records and submit records as requested.
  • Other duties as directed by supervisor.

Position Overview:

Provide a safe, supportive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for preschool children. Support daily classroom activities, assist with implementing lesson plans, and ensure compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and applicable regulations.

Education:

High school diploma or GED.

Per Head Start requirements, Teacher Assistants must also meet one of the following:

  • Hold a CDA credential (or equivalent state-awarded certificate)
  • Be enrolled in a CDA program to be completed within two years of hire
  • Be enrolled in a program leading to an associate or bachelor’s degree
Experience:

Early childhood development or related childcare experience preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist with implementing developmentally appropriate activities and strategies which support the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of preschool children.
  • Assist with providing an age‑appropriate learning environment that allows for individual differences.
  • Assist with promoting and encouraging a positive learning environment and nurturing teacher child interactions.
  • Substitute for teaching staff; assist with classroom activities.
  • Organize, sanitize and store classroom equipment and supplies.
  • Assist in conducting 2 educational home visits per child per year.
  • Maintain accurate records and submit records as requested.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as directed by supervisor.
Additional Requirements:
  • Initial and periodic physical exams required.
  • Must submit to initial and/or periodic state and/or federal criminal checks.
  • Must submit to initial and periodic drug and alcohol testing.
