Description of Work

Please include an official or unofficial transcript in the attachments section at the bottom of this application. It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits for a limited time, not to exceed 3 years (36 months). If you have questions concerning the time-limited status of this position, you may inquire at the interview. Selected candidate may be considered for other permanent positions, once the time-limited position is completed. The North Carolina Department of Revenue is currently seeking a Revenue Tax Auditor I to work in the Motor Fuels Section of the Examination Division. The Motor Fuels Section administers and enforces motor fuels tax laws, motor carrier laws, as well as some motor vehicle laws. The Motor Fuels Section of the Examination Division administers and enforces both motor fuels tax laws and motor carrier tax laws. They also conduct audits for International Fuel Tax Association (IFTA). This position is assigned specifically as the Joint Operation Center (JOC) auditor. The JOC auditor will conduct independent examinations of financial records of taxpayers that are not in voluntary compliance and have unique or special audit features or anticipated accounting, tax law, or investigative problems of a more unique nature, or of unusual difficulty or complexity. Due to the nature of work, a valid driver’s license is required, and some overnight travel will be required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Management Preferences
  • Knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices
  • Knowledge of a variety of accounting systems
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word
  • Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and Income Tax

Recruitment Range: $50,088 - $87,654 Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The knowledge, skills, and abilities listed in the vacancy announcement should be used as management preferences and be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field with at least twelve semester hours of accounting from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Related fields considered are as follows: Administrative Science, Business Law, Business Management, Business Operations, Finance, Financial Management, Public Administration, Public Sector & Government Administration Management, Tax, Tax Law and Trust & Wealth Management. A transcript (either official or unofficial) must accompany the application to verify completion of the required twelve accounting hours. Applications received without an attached transcript will be considered incomplete, unless you are a current DOR Tax Auditor.
